James Starley founded his company in 1859 to make sewing machines... and very swiftly realized where his machinery was headed. Just 10 years later he retooled his firm, renamed it the Coventry Machinists' Co., Ltd., and started making bicycles. In 1896, it would become the Swift Cycle Company, and began making motorcycles in 1898 and cars in 1900. Circa 1900 "Radica and Doodica - Siamese Twin" Poster This amazing poster of "The Orissa Twins" was created by Emile Clouet and catered to the Victorian Era's fascination with freaks and human oddities. It features the likenesses of Radica and Doodica, Siamese twins who were born in Orissa, India in 1888. The girls were joined at the chest by a band of cartilage. After being acquired by an English showman and touring France in the early 1900s, Doodica developed tuberculosis and the conjoined sisters were separated in 1902. Doodica died shortly after the operation, and Radica died from tuberculosis in 1904. This 36" x 49" poster, printed by "Dupuy & Fils, Paris," features three original tax stamps and benefits from a linen backing.
