A clean and boldly signed example, good condition. Measuring 4.5" x 7", encapsulated by PSA/DNA to the overall size of 6.5" x 10". DeWitt Clinton was an American politician and naturalist. He served as a United States senator, as the mayor of New York City, and as the sixth governor of New York. In this last capacity, he was largely responsible for the construction of the Erie Canal. Diam. DeWitt Clinton(1769-1828) was a New York senator, mayor and its seventh governor. He was also a presidential candidate in 1812. He heavily pushed for the construction of the Erie Canal.

              "Albany, 24 June, 1822. My dear Sir, I return you the enclosed interesting letter, by the mail or the safest channel of conveyance. I hope that the sender is correct respecting the rise of the dormant (???). If the people will succumb to the abuses and pretentions which are practiced by their functionaries, I suppose the (nephew?) that there is no excitable principle in the public mind and that the promises of freedom have perished. Ere that you have seen (Thomas, died 1826) Jefferson's recent letter. He meets the frame of the charge and denies in to the receipt of any money in ther bill. I shall be happy to hear from you often, and believe me yours truly and respectfully, DeWitt Clinton. E. Barron, Esq." Framed with 4 1/4" x 3 1/4" engraved portrait. 7" x 7 1/2" letter. This is a lovely needlework embroidered sampler of the Dewitt Clinton Locomotive shown from 1831 in a blue yarn with Masonic symbols adorning the top corners of the sampler. The frame is old but in good condition considering its age and the sampler is well preserved. Overall this piece is in great display condition. The measurements of this framed sampler are 16 1/4" x 18 1/4".

ALS, one page, 8 x 9.75, April 1, 1825. Letter to the president of the Senate, sending a list of 12 names nominated for positions in the Orange County Court, as well as one other gentleman listed at the bottom. Signed twice by Clinton, once after the list, and once at the conclusion. In very good condition, with intersecting folds one through a single letter of both signatures, writing and signatures a shade light, but completely legible, a bit of scattered light toning and soiling, and paper loss, a couple tears and mounting remnant to second integral page. Clinton served on the Erie Canal Commission from 1810 to 1824. As Governor of New York (an office he held at the time these documents were signed) Clinton shepherded the construction of the Erie Canal to completion. 2. ROOSEVELT, JAMES. 1828-1900. 2 Documents Signed, 2 pp, 4to, New York, July 2, 1866 and July 8, 1873, the earlier being a bond in the amount of $2000 issued by the Canal Department for the enlargement of the Erie, the Oswego, and the Cayuga and Seneca Canals, the later being a receipt issued at the redemption of the bond, bond with cancellations and loss, Roosevelt signature on verso; receipt with light creasing. The father of Franklin Delano Roosevelt invests in his state's infrastructure. With miscellaneous documents, 1829-1868, relating to the various New York canals, including documents relating to the construction on the Chenango Canal, 1836; a series of checks from 1848 paying for canal advertisements in the New York Tribune; a note from a farmer claiming property damage by canal construction; and a roster of workers engaged in the construction of the Champlain Canal from September to October 1829.
