Clifford later took charge of communications between Lord Chelmsford in Durban and the forces in the field during the Anglo-Zulu war of 1879. A.L.S., H H Clifford, four pages, 8vo, Horse Guards, 31st March 1870, to 'My dear Fruth'. Clifford thanks his correspondent for their kind note and remarks 'I am sure that I have to thank you; & I do so most sincerely for the very kind manner in which you have worked with me for the last 5 years & more particularly since I have held the appointment of O.G.M.G. here', further adding 'It has been a great pleasure to me to see the admirable manner in which you have worked all this time, & I only wish that His Royal Highness had all such faithful & conscientious officials under him as yourself'.
