JEAN-FRANÇOIS GANIF DIT CLERMONT - Huiles sur toile; Ensemble de quatre panneaux (partie supérieure cintrée)

      Est: CHF100,000 - CHF120,000

JEAN-FRANÇOIS GANIF DIT CLERMONT , PARIS, 1717 - REIMS, 1807 Figures in a bucolic landscape Oils on canvas; Set of four panels (upper part arched) 207 x 92.7 cm These four scenes content us with the bucolic pleasures of a watered-down countryside. Allegories of the senses or games on innocence, these shepherdesses and operetta shepherds indulge in idleness, playing blind man's buff here, viewing some dark room there... The rare sheep are used as pretexts to create a pastoral atmosphere to which the shepherdesses' ribbons bring the charm of the fake. This revisited nature, in four panels used to decorate the walls of an aristocratic residence or, more likely, a pavilion or a factory, serves as a mise en abyme for the infatuation of an idle society with country parties. These young shepherdesses, marquises in disguise, herald the fashion, coming from England where the artist stayed, for rustic hamlets such as those of Sylvie at Chantilly or of Queen Marie-Antoinette at Versailles. Composed according to symmetrical rhythms in pastel tones against which the more vivid silhouettes of the figures stand out, these panels constitute a decorative ensemble in perfect harmony with the rocaille interiors of the reign of Louis XV. Jean-François Ganif, known as 'Clermont' (1717-)807, was a French painter, draughtsman and aquafortist. Although little is known about his origins, Clermont exhibited his first works in Paris, a Saint Sebastian in 1753 and a Holy Family at the Académie de Saint-Luc, in 1756, and then, among other paintings, a large canvas depicting the Wrath of Achilles, in 1762, his last year in Paris. In the meantime, he went to England where he stayed for several years, executing ceilings and ornaments for buildings in the gardens of which the above panels are a perfect testimony. Among his prestigious works are a gallery for the Prince of Wales at Kew, two temples on Monkey Island near Windsor for the Duke of Marlborough, the ceiling of Lord Walpole's Gothic library at Twickenham, the panels of Lord Strafford's dining room in St. James's Square, based on Raphael's boxes, and a ceiling for Lord Northumberland at Sion. On his return to France, in 1760 he was approved by the Academy and appointed professor of drawing at the Academy of Rheims, a post he held until the school was abolished during the Revolution. In 1795, he was appointed professor of drawing at the new Central School of Châlons. A skilled draughtsman painting pastorals in the style of Boucher, Coypel and Lancret, Clermont is sought after in particular for his landscapes and his exotic bestiary of birds and monkeys. He had a major influence on naturalist representation, for the lively appearance of his models. He produced many paintings of interior decorations in Reims, of which the library holds a large number of drawings. Provenance: Maurice Segoura, Paris, 23 February 1983 Appraisal: Alastair Laing
