      • Hendrick de Clerck (Bruxelles 1570 - 1630) attribuito
        May. 14, 2024

Hendrick de Clerck (Bruxelles 1570 - 1630) attribuito

        Est: €2,600 - €3,500

Hendrick de Clerck (Brussels 1570 - 1630) attributed Madonna of the Annunciation Oil on panel 144,5 x 81 cm Very interesting is the comparison with the Annunciation auctioned at Bonhams in New York on 01/27/2006, where in addition to the physiognomic characteristics of the Madonna unchanged in the various artworks, we find the same setting with the variation of the moved vase of flowers from above the table at the feet of the Virgin.

      • Hendrick de Clerck, Adoration of the shepherds
        Nov. 18, 2023

Hendrick de Clerck, Adoration of the shepherds

        Est: €120,000 - €160,000

Signed lower right: h. de clerck Hendrick De Clerck belonged to the late Mannerist generation of artists preceding Peter Paul Rubens and the Flemish Baroque; his output was strongly influenced by his contemporary Marten de Vos, of whom he was a pupil. Following the iconoclastic outbreaks of 1556, the artist was often commissioned new altarpieces for churches in and around Brussels, for which he adopted the clear visual language common in post-Tridentine Counter-Reformation art; he kept faithful to this style despite continuing to work through the early decades of the seventeenth-century, when the Baroque language was in full bloom. The present painting relates to other pieces of the same subject, which the artist visited often in this career: If a strong reference to the northern mannerism is clearly detectable, figures such as the bowing shepherd and the child blowing on the fire, refer to the Italian 16th century figurative culture (particularly evident is the reference to Bassano´s œuvre), which he learned during his Roman stay.

Roland Savery - (Landscape and Animals) - Attributed to and Hendrick de Clerck (approx. 1560-1630) - (figures), Adam and Eve at the Fall

        Est: €15,000 - €20,000

Roelant Savery was a chamber painter of Rudolf II, in Prague. He is famous for his landscapes with numerous animals. The dense forest landscape with many animals in this image refers to his style. The light bodies of Adam and Eve stand out against the background of a dark forest. The blonde, seductively beautiful Eve faces the viewer in front, while the seated Adam is turned on his back. Eve, smiling, her eyes downcast, gives Adam an apple from the tree of knowledge that the snake offers her. The lion still lives here in paradise with other animals.

The Annunciation with monogram 'HDC' (lower left) oil on panel 491/8 x 38 in. (124.7 x 96.5 cm.) PROVENANCE The Rt. Hon. Godfrey Locker Lampson, P.C., M.P., Barlborough Hall, Nottinghamshire; Christie's, London, 31 January 1930, lot 121, as de Vos (81/2 gns. to Moore). NOTES Little is known about Hendrick de Clerck's training. One of the generation of late Flemish Mannerists immediately preceding Rubens, along with such artists as Otto van Veen and Abraham Janssens, he is recorded in Rome in 1587 working with his compatriot Frans van de Casteele. His style is close to that of Marten de Vos who was traditionally thought to have been his teacher, but he probably trained with Joos van Winghe in Italy. He returned to Brussels where he worked as a court painter to the governors of the southern Netherlands, where he was a member of the painters' guild. His eminent position within the guild was affirmed in 1594 when he was appointed court painter in Brussels, first to Archduke Ernest and after his death to the new Archduke, Albert and Isabella. That Hendrick de Clerck was a much sought after figure painter is also illustrated by his collaboration with Jan Breughel I for whom he painted the figures in landscapes.
