      Big red sky watercolor, signed lower left Shirley Clement AWS. Unframed, as is, see reverse. Shirley Clement is one of the first few women in Florida accepted for membership by the American Watercolor Society. She was part of the Sarasota Artist's Colony, studying with Hilton Leech at his Amangansett Art School where she later taught, and was one of the founding members of the Petticoat Painters. Clement developed a personal oil technique utilizing plastic glazes that permits unusually brilliant and transparent effects.       This is a watercolor by Shirley Clement, a noted artist who lived in Florida and New York. She was one of the few women accepted for early membership by the American Watercolor Society; she became a member in 1953 and was known for figure and portrait painting. Her dad was a commercial artist in New York and she was related to Henri Matisse. Two of her paintings are in the permanent collection at the University of Florida. The watercolor here is very reminiscent of a watercolor she did which portrayed the Everglades. The trees and colors are very similar on both pieces. The overall size is 13 1/4 x 15 1/8 in wide and the sight size is 6 5/8 x 8 7/8 in. wide.

Shirley Clement is one of the few women in Florida accepted for membership by the American Watercolor Society She has been a member since 1953. The University of Florida has purchased two of her paintings for its permanent collection Many of her works have been sold to private collections throughout the United States. Miss Clement's oils and watercolors have been exhibited from New York to Miami, winning many awards. She has been honored by one-man shows in many Florida cities. Critics have applauded the apparent spontaneity of her work and the vibrance and luminosity of her color. Miss Clement has developed a personal oil technique, utilizing plastic glazes that permits unusually brilliant and transparent effects. In four years of formal art studies, Miss Clement had the opportunity to study with many outstanding artists, including Hilton Leech and Loran Wilford.
