An Indian Camp by a River Oil Painting by Henri Cleenewerck

Oil painting by Henri Cleenewerck. Framed dimensions: 15" x 21.75." Henri Cleenewerck (1818-1901) was born in Watou, Belgium and emigrated to the United States, where he was working in Savannah, Georgia by 1860. Around 1865 he traveled to Cuba, where he was acclaimed for his views of the Canimar River, San Antonio de los Banos, and exotic jungle paintings. Cleenewerck left Cuba in 1868 at the start of the War for Independence and returned to America, where he became a naturalized citizen. He traveled extensively in the United States before returning to Europe. In 1878, claiming his place of residence as Poperinge, Belgium, he exhibited at the Brussels Salon. The following year he returned to San Francisco where he lived for three years at the Chamberlain House on the corner of Stockton and Bush Streets. In 1882 Cleenewerck exhibited at the National Academy of Design and spent the summer sketching in Colorado. From 1880 to 1900 he traveled regularly from America to Europe, participating in Salon exhibitions in Brussels and Paris. Cleenewerck died in Brussles in 1901. The town of Poperinge held a retrospective of his work in 1995. City: State: (Burger Collection)

(American/Belgian, 1818-1901)View of a Town, said to be Marthasville (early Atlanta), Georgia, painted circa 1854, unsigned, oil on canvas, 31 x 36 in.; original 19th century lemon gilt frame lined with wax and linen, restretched on new stretcher, scattered points of retouch, crackle; frame with abrasions. Provenance: Collection of Mary Jane Ross (d. 1922), sold with contents of the Ross Museum, Charleston, S.C., circa 1958-59; Private Collection, Charleston; Belgian artist Henry Cleenewerck was traveling and painting in Georgia in the 1850s, as documented by a historical sketch of Savannah, Georgia executed in 1860, as well as by a view of Tallulah Falls that descended with the painting offered here. While family tradition (and the file on this painting at MESDA, ref. S-15256) holds that this view represents early Atlanta, Georgia (known as Marthasville), views of Atlanta are extremely rare prior to the Civil War and exist primarily in photography. While architectural and topographical features in this work depart from some features of early Atlanta, Cleenewerk's fine detail shows what appears to be a long low train depot and even a gas street lamp, suggesting the beginning of a cosmopolitan city. In early Atlanta, the train depot was situated near the city's first church, as seen in Cleenewerk's view of this young city. The date suggestion for this painting comes from an almost identical landscape with deer, signed and dated by the artist (sold by Bonham's & Butterfield's, August 5, 2008, lot #149). The date also seems to correspond to the construction of the train deport in Atlanta. While the exact location depicted by the painting remains a tantalizing mystery, it stands as a great accomplishment among early Southern views.
