Charles John Clarke (California, Florida, 1893 - 1984) Son of the artist Thomas Shields Clarke, Charles and his sister were born in Paris where his father was studying art. Charles Clarke is known to have studied at the Art Students League in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. He served in World war I as a Private in the Ordinance Department of the American Expeditionary Forces. According to his passport application in 1921, he lived in Florida and also had a home in Lenox, Massachusetts, where he worked as a landscape artist. In 1940, he lived in Lower Merion, Pennsylvania.
