    • Clarke (Arthur C.) Typed Letter signed with additional notes in the author's hand, 1980 & other related correspondence (4)
      May. 09, 2024

Clarke (Arthur C.) Typed Letter signed with additional notes in the author's hand, 1980 & other related correspondence (4)

      Est: £150 - £200

Clarke (Arthur C.) Typed Letter signed to "Dear Mr Mottram" from the author, with additional autograph postscript in the author's hand, 1p., 16th September 1980, "...Yes, gravity is a mystery, but there have been immense advances in its study during the last few years (e.g. see recent books by Hawking, Wheeler, etc.) and we do know what it is - a curvature of space-time. The real question is - what is space-time?!", folds, envelopes, 1980; together with a duplicate of the typed letter, this signed by Clarke, as well as 1p. article torn out from Science News, vol.177 'Gravity's Repulsive Side', with a line from Clarke to head "I found this just after answering your letter! AC.", and the original letter sent to Clarke with the recipient's questions, v.s., v.d. (4) *** A curious correspondence between Arthur C. Clarke and a fan.  The first typed letter, a blanket photocopied response to all fanmail, was sent first, with the author signing it, and underlining in pen the sentence "I don't have the time or qualifications to discuss them" with accompanying exclamation marks. It seems, though, that Clarke reconsidered the letter, and sent another of his standard typed responses to Mottram -  this in an envelope in his own hand -  but this time with a hand-written response to the question of gravity, together with a torn out article. A rare insight from the then-famous (and sometime curmudgeonly) writer to a fan.
