Neatly folded in the corner is a horse blanket with the initials B K. Signed and dated in lower left, "James Clark / 1888." Housed in a modern wooden frame. Sight: 23 1/4" H x 19 1/4" W. Frame: 30" H x 26" W.

        DESCRIPTION: "Mr. D.E. Grace Darling, Winner/of the Kingstonbottom Steeple Chase/Rode by W.T.F. 1847". James Clark (British, 1858-1943). Oil on canvas. Signed right of bottom middle J. Clark. In gilt wood and composition frame with faded J. Clark 1847 to center. James Clark was first noticed by a wide audience in 1914 when his painting entitled The Great Sacrifice was reproduced as the souvenir print issued by The Graphic illustrated newspaper. This painting depicted a soldier who lay dying on a battlefield with an vision of Christ on the Cross above and was popular in both the religious and secular worlds. Clark also became widely known for his many horse paintings. MEASUREMENTS: 16-3/4" high x 23" wide; frame 2-1/2" wide. CONDITION: Restored in 2006 with accompanying receipt and pictures.         James Clark (British, 1858-1943) The Cottenham Shire inscribed lower left "Fed by James Ivatt Esq / Cottenham / Cambridgeshire" and signed lower right "Jas. Clark" oil on canvas h:89 w: 119 cm The Ivatt Family were substantial landowners in Cottenham during the 18th and 19th century buying ever increasing acreage around Cottenham. In the 1770s they bought the Gothic House in Cottenham and substantially altered it in the 1860s to include the decorative chimneys. Historical records show James Ivatt, following the Inclosure Act 1845, owning 475 acres and becoming the major landowner of the area.
