  • EDWARD CLARK (1926-2019)
    Jan. 03, 2025

    EDWARD CLARK (1926-2019)

    Est: $75,000 - $150,000

Abstract, 1959 Oil on canvas 72 x 48 inches. N.B. The winning bidder will have (30) days to have this examined by a recognized authority if they so choose. Artist Background: Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Edward Clark "could be credited as the architect of the shaped canvas." He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1946 to 1951, and during this time was painting in a realist and impressionist style. However, his approach changed between 1952 and 1958, when he first lived in Paris and enrolled at the Academy de la Grande Chaumiere. A major influence towards abstraction on him was Nicolas de Stael, Russian modernist painter with whom he associated in France. George Sugarman then persuaded him to return to New York to help found the Brata Gallery with Ronald Bladen, Al Held and others. Clark showed there until 1966, when he returned to France, which has remained his primary residence. He has been one of the early African American pioneers of abstract painting in the post-war era and credits his early inspirations as being the paintings of Nicolas de Stael and the music of Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, and later the gestural abstractions of Hans Hartung and Pierre Soulages. He has exhibited widely in modernist circles in New York City, Paris, Washington DC, and Japan, including the 1973 Whitney Biennial. In fall, 1998, he had a special exhibition of his work at Cinque Gallery in New York City. Commemorating his 40th anniversary of his first solo debut in New York, the exhibit combined large-scale canvases and smaller works on paper and showed his continuing commitment to abstraction. His large canvases he places on the floor and paints with a push broom, achieving a sense of pure motion.

  • Edward Clark Porter, Beach Notes, 1980

Edward Clark Porter, Beach Notes, 1980

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Etching, Edition 22/75. Edward Clark Porter was born in 1935 and was largely influenced creatively by the 1950s. Abstract Expressionism, a form of painting that studied ideas of spirituality and the sublime, dominated the 1950s. A number of artists concentrated on the formal properties of painting, and action painting took inspiration from the political freedom of the United States, as opposed to the strict limitations of the Soviet bloc. New York City became the focus for modernism on an international scale during the Post-War period. Many artists had travelled to the city during the Second World War, fleeing in exile from Europe. This led to a substantial pooling of talent and ideas. Influential Europeans such as Piet Mondrian, Josef Albers and Hans Hoffmann provided inspiration for American artists whilst in New York, and influenced cultural growth in the United States for many subsequent decades. Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Frank Kline, Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still and Adolph Gottlieb were influential artists of this period. The male dominated environment has been subsequently revisited to recognise the contributions of female artists such as Lee Krasner, Joan Mitchell, and Louise Bourgeois, amongst others. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this item go towards Island Mountain Arts (Wells, BC) (www.imarts.com).

Ed Clark, 1926-2019, Paris Series, acrylic on canvas, 24 x 24 inches

    Est: $100,000 - $200,000

Ed Clark 1926-2019 Paris Series acrylic on canvas 2003 signed and dated verso inscribed verso, Ed Clark, Paris-03-1 Ed Clark was born in New Orleans but moved to Chicago in early childhood. He served in the US Air Force between 1944-46, and from 19471951, attended the Art Institute of Chicago on the G.I. Bill. He traveled to Paris in 1952, and continued his studies at the L’Academie de la Grande Chaumiere for two years. Clark found the style of education to be much more lax in Paris than at the AIC, but he found inspiration in acquaintances and unlimited access to great works of art. He was particularly influenced by the Russian-born painter, Nicolas de Stael, whose work Clark found to be somewhere between hard-edge and the gestural abstraction popular in post-war Paris. Clark’s work became increasingly abstract and he began working in a much larger format. In 1953, he was included in an exhibition of American artists working in France at the Galerie Craven. He was the only African American represented. He returned to New York in 1957 for a solo exhibition at the Brata Gallery in the East Village, and continued to show there through 1959, but with the emergence of Pop Art in the 60s, not much was happening for Clark in the US. He returned to Paris in 1966 for a one man show at Galerie Creuze. Since the 1960s, Clark began using a push broom to push the paint across the canvas lying on the floor. It is interesting to note that his first teacher at the AIC, Louis Ritman, introduced Clark to the work of Claude Monet, and Clark, upon first arriving in Paris, went to see Waterlilies at the Musée du Jeu de Paume, and the work had a significant effect on Clark. Clark experimented with elliptical designs and both shaped canvases and painted, draped canvases. He was concerned with freeing the image concept from the limits of the canvas. Apr. 05, 2018

    ED CLARK (1926 - ) Untitled.

    Est: $60,000 - $90,000

ED CLARK (1926 - ) Untitled. Acrylic on linen canvas, 1990. 1295x1575 mm; 51x62 inches. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right recto. Signed, dated "Aug 1999", dedicated "To Danny" and inscribed "Acrylic Medium, Painted 1990, 51" x 62" inches, Untitled" in pencil, verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, Philadelphia (1999). This dynamic and beautiful canvas by Ed Clark is the largest painting by the artist to come to auction. It dates from his 1990 New York series - other works from this mid-career period were included in his submission of the Joan Mitchell Foundation grant. Clark's painting from this period displays some of his most daring brushwork - focusing on the gesture, Clark vigorously pushes paint across the canvas on the floor, and pushes the expressiveness of his abstraction to its limits. Inspired by a visit to Jack Whitten in Crete in 1971, Ed Clark began to travel to various foreign countries to paint - including Nigeria, Martinique, Bahia and Morocco - through the 1980s. Kellie Jones wrote in 1990 for the exhibiton Art Space catalogue - "The artist's travels to parts of the world have, in a sense, kept his work fresh and consistently exciting. Each trip has inspired a change or variation in color, materials, and approach to two-dimensional space. The resulting series of paintings records the memory of experience and translates it into the language of gesture." Between 1989 and 1991, Clark exhibited internationally at Gallery Kesser-Bohbot, Hamburg, Germany, Galerie Resche, Paris, France, Spiral Gallery, Brooklyn, Isobel Neal Gallery, Chicago, FIAC, Grand Palais, Paris, France, and G.R. N'Namdi Gallery, Birmingham, MI. His subsequent series include Paris from 1993-1995 and Egypt in 1998.
