Albert Clark (British, 1821-1909) The racehorse "Ormonde" with Fred Archer up on Newmarket Heath signed lower left "A Clark" and inscribed with title oil on canvas h:29 w:39 cm The racehorse "Ormonde" was owned by the Duke of Westminster and was a Triple Crown winner (a winner of the Derby, St Leger and the 2000 Guineas). Ormonde is generally considered one of the greatest racehorses ever. He was born in 1883. At the time he was often labelled as the 'horse of the century'. His achievements are even more impressive considering the strength of some of the other horses foaled in 1883. It is said that both Minting and The Bard were good enough to have won the Epsom Derby nine out of ten years. In early 1888 Minting, the horse Ormonde beat easily in the 2000 Guineas, was rated 15 pounds superior to the 1887 Derby winner Merry Hampton and the 1887 St Leger winner Kilwarlin

Flying Fox was the last great horse raced by Hugh Lupus Grosvenor, the 1st Duke of Westminster. The colt was the fourth generation in a remarkable male line developed by the Duke's Eaton Stud near Chester, England. Bend Or was a Derby winner; his son, Ormonde, won the Triple Crown; Ormonde's son, Orme, was a dual Eclipse Stakes winner, and Orme's son, Flying Fox, was to win a second Triple Crown for his breeder.
