      GEORGES CLARIN (1843-1919): ARAB STREET SCENE Watercolor with gouache highlights on paper, 1879, signed 'G.Clarin', dated and inscribed 'à Robert de Montesquiou/son ami' lower left, indistinctly inscribed on the reverse, with label from Shepherd Gallery, NY. 18 x 11 1/4 in. (sheet), 29 1/2 x 22 1/2 in. (frame). Note: This work is dedicated to Robert de Montesquiou (1855-1921), a well-known Symbolist poet, aesthete and flanneur famously depicted in portraits by James McNeil Whistler. Clarin, himself a denizen of Parisian society, was best known for his portraits of Sarah Bernhardt, his friend for over fifty years. Clarin made many trips to North Africa and was strongly influenced by the color, light, architecture and decoration of Morocco.
