DICHTERLESUNG AUF SÜDLICHER TERRASSE Öl auf Leinwand. 62 x 83 cm. Rechts unten signiert und ortsbezeichnet „N. Cipriani Roma“. In dekorativem vergoldeten Rahmen. Auf einer großen Terrasse mit zweifarbig gemustertem Steinboden sitzen zwei junge elegante Damen und lauschen aufmerksam den Worten eines Dichters, der vor ihnen in einem Armlehnstuhl sitzt und ihnen mit weitem Armgestus aus seinen Notizen auf Blättern in seiner linken Hand vorträgt. Eine der Damen sitzt leicht zurück gelehnt auf einem Zweisitzer in einem langen, hochgegürteten Kleid mit hellem Schal, trägt in ihren dunklen Haaren Schmuck und um den Hals eine Perlenkette, zudem stützt sie sich leicht mit ihrer linken Hand auf einen Schirm. Die zweite sitzende Dame trägt ein langes glänzendes gelbes Seidenkleid, ein schwarzes Samtband um den Hals und in ihren schwarzen Haaren Blütenschmuck und einen weißen kleinen Schleier. Den Fächer in ihrer rechten Hand hat sie leicht zum Mund geführt und mit ihren großen dunklen Augen strahlt sie den Vortragenden an. Rechts neben den Frauen steht ein elegant gekleideter Mann, mit Gehrock und Hemd mit Vatermörderkragen und weißer Schleife, typisch für die Mode des Biedermeier, dazu einen langen Gehstock in seiner linken Hand. Er lehnt an einer barocken Brüstung, auf der u.a. eine große Steinvase mit einer Agave steht. Hinter ihm fällt der Blick auf eine weite bergige Landschaft, in der südliche Zypressen zu erkennen sind. Qualitätvolle Malerei mit besonderer Herausstellung der feinen edlen Kleidung der Dargestellten. Anmerkung: Der Künstler brachte auf die deutschen und österreichischen Ausstellungen reizende Genrebilder in Öl und Wasserfarben. Zu solchen gehört auch das Gemälde „Ein galanter Dichter“ (genannt in: Müller/Singer: Allgemeines Künstler-Lexikon), das mit dem hier angebotenen Gemälde identisch sein könnte. (1260801) (18)

It is matted. It shows a view of the bay in Venice with boats in the foreground and the palace to the right. The piece is in good condition with only slight age-related signs of wear; foxing in the upper area. The watercolour painting is signed on the front, right, and labelled 'N. Cipriani, Roma'. The piece is dated and dedicated on the left: 'à Madame Zimmer Souvenir d'amitié - 1890'. The piece measures 30 x 51 in the wood frame. Nazareno Cipriani (1843-1923) Nazareno Cipriani was born on the 23rd of October 1843 in Rome and died there in 1923. His artistic career began with oil paintings and watercolours; later he took to historical and biblical pieces, but he also painted landscapes, figural genre scenes with architecture from Rome or Venice. Nazzareno Cipriani Rome 1843 - 1925 The alms Signed and annotated Roma l.r. Watercolour on paper, 30.5 x 61.5 cm N.B.: Venetian gondolas are always painted black. The origin of this was a severe epidemic of the plague that hit the city in 1562. The victims bodies were transported by gondola. The formerly colourful gondolas were painted black at this time as a tribute to the dead. Later this even became regulated by law. Another explanation for the uniformely coloured gondolas could be the decree issued by the Doge in 1652 concerning social equality. Over the years families had been decorating their private gondolas more and more. By obliging every gondola to be painted black, the Doge wanted to enforce the appearance a greater level of social equility. The fact that the colour black was chosen lies in the use of tar for the boats.

Cipriani/Roma". Auf Karton montiert. Das Oeuvre des Genre- und Landschaftsmalers Cipriani konzentriert sich überwiegend auf römische und venezianische Motive im Sommer. Er war zwar überwiegend Autodidakt, arbeitete jedoch eine zeitlang im Atelier von Achille Vertunni. Im Jahre 1875 gründete er u.a. mit Ettore Roesler Franz die Società degli Acquarellisti in Rom.
