Giovanni Battista Ciolina, Toceno 1870 - 1955 (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) (Toceno 1870 - 1955 (Verbano-Cusio-Ossola)) - - Giovanni Battista Ciolina was born into a farming family in the Vigezzo Valley in 1870. He attended the Rossetti Valentini School of Art in Santa Maria Maggiore for five years, starting in 1882, where he became close friends with other future painters such as Carlo Fornara, Gian Maria Rastellini and Lorenzo Peretti Junior. Here he absorbed the teachings of Enrico Cavalli, a great connoisseur of French art of the time and a historical innovator of painting in the Vigezzo Valley.In the late 1880s, he received a two-year scholarship to attend the Free School of the Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. A talented and precocious artist, he demonstrated his level of excellence with works such as "Portrait of Mother" (1890) and "The Red Parasol" (1892). Together with his friend and fellow painter Carlo Fornara, he spent a long period in Lyon between 1895 and 1896 studying the great masters and familiarizing himself with the new painting on the other side of the Alps.On his return to Italy he approached Divisionism, applying the new technique following the example of Giovanni Segantini. After his first participation in the Third Brera Triennale in 1897 with the painting "The Broken Thread," he opened a studio in Milan, where he produced numerous paintings in the Divisionist style, including "The Washerwoman," "Maiden Looking Out of the Window," and "Twilight Mannerism." He took part in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad and, gradually abandoning Divisionism, arrived at the 1907 Venice Biennale with the painting "Prelude to Spring," extensively using impasto and retaining the luminosity of his early works, but with the addition of a melancholy lyricism typical of Neo-Impressionism, often entrusted to broad compositions as in "Return to the Alp" and "Toceno at Sunset."At the beginning of the Great War, Ciolina left Milan and retired to the Vigezzo Valley, where he continued to paint landscapes, still lifes and religious frescoes until his death.**Exhibitions**-"Giovanni Battista Ciolina - Humanity and Landscapes of the Vigezzo Valley": Museo del Paesaggio, Pallanza, 1986-"A School of Painting in the Vigezzo Valley: 1881-1919": Turin/Novara, 1990-"Carlo Fornara. Toceno, 1870 ; 1955 Paesaggio di montagna con gregge Firmato G B Ciolina in basso a sinistra Olio su tela, cm 100X130,5 Giovanni Battista Ciolina si forma con Enrico Cavalli alla Scuola d'Arte di Santa Maria Maggiore, dedicandosi principalmente alla pittura di paesaggio, traendo soggetti e suggestioni dalla Val Vigezzo, luogo cardine della sua vita, con la freschezza florida dei suoi verdi primaverili, il calore dei suoi autunni infiammati e la luminosità della neve e del cielo. Nel 1895, compirà, insieme a Carlo Fornara suo compagno di studi, un viaggio a Lione, per aggiornarsi e approfondire lo studio del naturalismo francese. Una volta fatto ritorno in Italia, Ciolina abbandonerà però il Naturalismo volgendosi al Divisionismo, sull'esempio di Giovanni Segantini, da cui imparerà la scomposizione e l'uso plastico del colore, pur rimanendo fedele alla tradizione impressionista, per l'uso sapiente della luce. Dopo l'esordio alla Triennale di Brera nel 1897, partecipa all'Esposizione Nazionale di Torino del 1898, nel 1906 all'Esposizione Internazionale di Belle Arti per l'inaugurazione del Valico del Sempione e all'Esposizione Universale di Bruxelles del 1910. La grande tela qui illustrata è caratterizzata da tonalità brillanti, nella verde vallata animata da piccole case in pietra regna un'atmosfera di pace, mentre al centro si erge una montagna imbiancata dalla neve sotto un cielo limpido e azzurro.
