"CIAPALO" CZESLAW PIUS CIAPALO (Poland, 1942). "Opus B-74- Szkic do symfoni programolej Pory Roku-Luty Zima", 1974. Oil on canvas. With label on the back of the Art Zaklady Gallery (Poland). Signed, dated and titled on the back. Measurements: 35 x 40 cm; 37 x 42 cm (frame). Work titled Opus B-74- Sketch for the symphonic program Seasons-February, Winter, made by the renowned Polish artist who graduated in Wroclaw, at the State High School of Fine Arts (1963). In 1963-1964, he studied at the Faculty of Conservation of Monuments and at the Faculty of Art and Didactics of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, and then painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (1964-1968) in the workshop of Eugeniusz Arct, later in the workshop of Aleksander Kobzdej. In 1969, in the workshop of A. Kobzdej, he graduated with honors. After graduation, he worked for six months on farms in England, while at weekends, in London galleries and museums, he furthered his academic studies by analyzing the work of world painters of the New Figuration circle. After returning to Poland, he took an active part in the Ciapalo-Makowski-Masznicz group. Throughout his career he has exhibited his work in over a hundred group exhibitions, Polish Painting Festivals, biennials, triennials and international exhibitions. In the 1970s, he animated and directed the "One Work Show" at the House of the Visual Artist in Warsaw, and later the Academic Gallery of the Podlasie Academy in Siedlce, where he worked as an associate professor. In 1969-1974, he actively participated in the "Ciapalo-Malkowski-Masznicz" group; he was co-curator of the "O Poprawa" art movement and curator of the first "O Poprawa" exhibition (Warsaw, 1972) and organizer of the "O Poprawa" movement exhibition in Copenhagen (1976), as well as - with Geno Malkowski - four times in France (1977-1978). In 1981, he initiated and curated the famous and controversial 14th Zachta ZPAP District Exhibition, entitled "Democracy in Art". In the first period of his work (1969-1974), Pius Ciapalo created paintings influenced by the New Figuration, with depictions of fragments of the body approximated in the frame and accompanied in the background by silhouetted figures in motion. Emphasizing female sexuality, the artist turned these images into archaized symbols of eroticism. The second creative period (1974-1988) saw the creation of paintings of monumental proportions, which the artist called "symphonies". The third period of Pius Ciapalo's work begins in 1988. The artist is fascinated by the modern architecture of the great American agglomerations. In the academic year 1988-1989, he was a visiting professor at the Eastern Illinois University in Charleston (USA) and it is during this time that the "Architectural" symphony begins, which the artist continues after his return to Poland.
