Signed lower right. Dimensions: (Frame) H 36.5" x W 29" ; (Painting) H 29" x W 21" Condition: A few small losses to paint at upper left-center and along lower edge, including some losses to signature. Light surface dust. Soiling and separation to linen liner; frame intentionally distressed, with some additional nicks and losses to finish.

Molli Chwat (Poland / France, 1888-1979) - Landscape, Oil on Canvas. Signed. Framed. 31x37cm. Frame: 49x55cm. Molli Chwat (1888-1979) was a Jewish painter born into a family of bankers from Bialystok. He developed his early discovered talent - at first in the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg and in 1906 he moved to Paris (reportedly on the advice of the famous painter Ilya Repin) to study in one of the so-called independent academies of arts. Later he spent a couple of years in Russia (1910-1918 or 1910-1925). After returning to Paris he studied in Ecole des Beaux Arts. He spent World War II in Casablanca and later on came back to Paris where he stayed to the end of his days. He painted mainly portraits and landscapes, after the war also biblical scenes. He is one of the most interesting representatives of Ecole de Paris. Source: Vitrual Shtetl

MOLLI CHWAT Bialystok, Poland 1888 - 1979 France (Russian / Polish / French) Born in Bialystok, Poland then entered the Saint Petersburg Academy of Fine Art. With the encouragement of the notable painter Ilia Repine, he went in 1906 to a brief stay in Paris, were he was a free auditor in an art courses in the Art Academy. In 1909, he went to Geneva where met Gattin, a medicine student. The two fell in love and got married in the same year. In 1910, they came back to Saint Petersburg. Not much is known about this period of time in his life, until 1918. Feeling the tense building up in Russia, Chwat managed escaping from Russia before the revolution started. He and his wife went to Paris and during these years he entered the Fine Art Academy and later on the Open University. During the Second World War, Chwat became a refugee in Casablanca. He came back to Paris after the liberation and devoted his time to painting. In 1952, he received the Othon Friesz award. In 1957, he immigrated to Israel. Until 1945, Chwat dealt with traditional classic subjects such as Portraits, but in 1945 he dedicated his painting to biblical themes, a transition that was very typical for Jewish painters after the Holocaust. Chawt died in 1979 in France. His works can be found in various museums in Israel and in France. Boats in a Port Oil on canvas 43 x 60 cm Signed Provenance: The collection of Uri and Rami Nehostan, the Art Museum in Ashdot Yaacov, Israel. The work bears the Museum label verso. Very good condition, framed Note: This work will be shipped from Israel.

CHWAT, Molli, (French, 1888-1979): Parisian Street Scene, Oil on Canvas, 16" x 13", signed lower right, contemporary framing, 19.5" x 16.5". Chwat was born in Poland and studied art in Saint Petersburg and Paris. After WWII he immigrated to Israel and began painting biblical themes. "There are artists who attached to the ceremonial religion, others attached to the mysticism of the legends and some who enter the esoteric traditions. Chwat, in his painting, praises enthusiastically the great events that relate to the holy book. By this, he makes a strong and ancient connection to the source of Jewish art."- La Via Juive, 1955.
