Antique Silhouette of Alfred Vance Churchill (1864-1949). In frame 9 1/2"x11 1/2"x1". Weight 1 pd 6 oz. Alfred Churchill was a very influential artist and teacher at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries and at the vanguard of early American Impressionism. He was born in Northampton, Massachusetts in 1864 and died in 1949. He was the son of noted Oberlin College professor of mathematics and philosophy, Charles Henry Churchill. He studied in Berlin, Leipzig, and Paris from 1887-1890, and received a Masters of Arts from Oberlin in 1898. He studied again in Paris from 1904-1906 on a grant from Columbia University and attended the Academie Julian under Jules Lefebvre. He was a member of the North Shore Art Association in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and passed through Rockport at the time when George Bellows, Edward Potthast, Childe Hassam, John Twachtman, Willard Metcalf and many other early American masters were there. Alfred strongly influenced the standards of teaching art as the Vice President of the College Art Association. He was the first director of the Smith College Museum of Art, and was widely credited for making it one of the premier art museums in the country. In addition to teaching art at Smith, he also taught at the Teacher's College of Columbia University, directed the art department at Grinnell College in Iowa, and taught in St. Louis and at Johns Hopkins. Churchill is represented in the Smith College Museum of Art and numerous private collections. He is listed in over 16 books including Davenport's, and Who's Who in American Art.
