It shows a rough natural landscape under the moonlight - a typical theme for the artist. The nocturnal scene is rendered in muted colors. Two houses are set on a pasture, still partly covered with snow, in front of a forest. Churberg's oeuvre is defined by representations of the Finnish countryside in late autumn and winter, especially scenes at dusk, during the sunset or in the moonlight. Particularly striking seems the unusually expressive brushwork with which the artist established her very own innovative style long before Expressionism as such found its manifestation in art. The work is in good condition. A tear in the right image is closed and backed with a patch of canvas on the reverse, some minor craquelure here and there. The work is monogrammed 'FC' and dated '78' in red lower right. The frame shows some wear. The framed work measures 63 x 73.5 cm, the stretcher frame measures 50.5 x 60.5 cm. Fanny Churberg (1845-1892) At the age of twenty Fanny Churberg began her artistic training in Helsinki, where she was a student of Emma Gylden and Alexandra Frosterus-Saltin as well as Berndt Lindholm, who had studied at the Dusseldorf Academy and - as one of the most successful Finnish landscape painter - had a major influence on Churberg's oeuvre. In 1867 she went to Dusseldorf for the first time, where she became a student of the landscape painter Carl Ludwig. Further stays in the German city followed, during which she created works inspired by themes from her home country. Churberg did not adopt the academic style of painting but developed their own progressive style. However her innovative works were not very well received at the time. It was only in the aftermath of a retrospective in 1919 when her works found recognition and their manner of representing nature influenced future generations of Finnish artists well into the 20th century.
