          F. Earl Christy (American Postcard Illustrator)

          Est: $500 - $1,500

Frederic Earl Christy (American Postcard Illustrator : 1883-1961)This F. Earl Christy painting, "Aeroplane" was created as a calendar print in 1915 for the American Artworks Company of Coshocton, Ohio. There were twelve different images, one for each month of the year, and each with a beautiful young girl holding a trophy she had won in a competition. In 1915 few people had actually seen an airplane; however,In 1912, Harriet Quimby, a writer for "Leslie's Illustrated Weekly"became the first female to fly across the English Channel. At the time, many people were fascinated that a woman could do such a thing, thus she became famous. She was known for creating her own purple satin flying suit. This image is not Harriet Quimby, but perhaps Earl Christy was making it known that a woman could achieve anything, if she set her mind to it. It can be noted that both Christy and Quimbyhad ties to "Leslie's Illustrated Weekly". Frame measures 35 1/2 x 45 inches; Artwork measures 25 x 34 inches

Two organizations lay claim to the title Chicago Girls Flying Club; both were active in the 1930s, and both sponsored events at Chicago's airfields. As no historic accounts exist for an event as significant as "America's First All Womens Air Exhibition," it is likely this was small show that used large words to try and capture an audience. Christy was a famous pin-up artist and magazine illustrator, his lovely girls appearing on the covers of such magazines as Photoplay.
