Gerahmt.,,Das Gemälde des Dresdners Ludwig Theodor Choulant ist ein typisches Erzeugnis der beginnenden Kommerzialisierung des Tourismus. Gemälde dieser Art waren beim aufstrebenden Bürgertum, das das Reisen entdeckte, als Souvenir begehrt. Die Vegetation, der Blick auf die antiken Stätten, nicht zuletzt das südliche Licht – dies alles duftig in Szene gesetzt, sind es Elemente, die die Erwartungshaltung einer zahlungskräftigen Klientel erfüllten. Choulant hatte eigentlich eine Ausbildung zum Architekten u. a. als Schüler Gottfried Sempers genossen, doch verlegte er sein Schaffen nach einem ausgedehnten Aufenthalt in Italien 1850/51, als er Venedig, Florenz, Rom und auch Sizilien besuchte, auf malerische Ansichten aus Italien, zumeist als Aquarell, seltener in Öl ausgeführt. Insbesondere mit seinen Venedig-Ansichten war Choulant seit Mitte der 1850er Jahren erfolgreich und auf zahlreichen Ausstellungen vertreten, unsere Ansicht des Forum Romanums in Rom ist wahrscheinlich identisch mit einer "Partie des Forums", die 1873 auf der Weltausstellung in Wien und 1874 in Dresden gezeigt wurde.
