    Vera Vladimirovna Khlebnikova, Russian, Soviet era, 1891 to 1941, gouache painting on paper, The Portrait of Moisey Solomonovich Askinazi. Signed lower right. Titled upper right. Moisey Solomonovich Askinazi, 1901 to 1947, was a Russian Soviet graphic. Studied at Vkhutemas. Vera Vladimirovna Khlebnikova, a Russian artist, graphic artist, Avant Garde artist. Sister of the poet Velimir Khlebnikov. In mid 1912 she attended an academy in Paris, where she studied with Kees van Dongen. From the spring of 1913 to the middle of 1916 she lived in Italy. In 1922 she began working on a series of illustrations based on the works of Velimir Khlebnikov, Mermaid, Wind, Vila, Leshak. All circa: 1920s. Along with other works, they were shown at the exhibition of the group of artists United Art, 1925. Moscow. In the future, in the field of book graphics, she worked together with her husband P.V. Miturich. One of a kind artwork.

[sight] signed lower left PROVENANCE Acquired by the previous owner from a private collection in Paris EXPERTISE A copy of a comparative artistic analysis provided by Maria Valyayeva, Moscow, 2008. (Copy available upon request). A Copy of a stylistic analysis report by Mikhail German, Saint Petersburg, 2012. (Copy available upon request) LOT NOTES The present lot is a very rare work by the artist Vera Khlebnikova, the younger sister of the leading Futurist poet Velimir Khlebnikov. An exceptional painter, her works are delicate in character and composition, showing not only Fauvist influences but reminiscent of Vrubel and Nesterov as well. Khlebnikova's paintings come to market exceedingly rarely, the majority of them having been destroyed in a studio fire in 1930. Having began studying art at 14 in Kazan, she would later study in Kiev Moscow, and St. Petersburg, before coming to Paris in 1912, where she became the favorite student of Kes van Dongen at the Academie Witte. CONDITION Observed in frame, the work is appears in overall good condition. Some overall surface dirt. Notably bowing to the board apparent along the top. Vertical crack to the panel at the lower right, just below the nude woman's hand, 4 cm (1 5/8 in.) long. Small dent/scratch to her backside. Inspection under UV reveals no apparent signs of restoration or repairs. N.B. All lots are sold in as-is condition at the time of sale.
