  • George Chinnery,  Sketch of a lady, bust-length, leaning on a ledge and looking upwards
    Mar. 12, 2025

George Chinnery,  Sketch of a lady, bust-length, leaning on a ledge and looking upwards

    Est: £500 - £700

George Chinnery,  British 1774-1852-  Sketch of a lady, bust-length, leaning on a ledge and looking upwards;  pencil, pen, and black ink on paper, 11.2 x 9.6 cm.  Provenance:  with Martyn Gregory, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Hong Kong; where purchased by the present owner in c.1990. Exhibited:  Hong Kong, Martyn Gregory, Mandarin Oriental Hotel, c.1990.  Note:  Chinnery was a prolific draughtsman who produced sketches during his travels in south China, where he was the only western painter in the early to mid 19th century. His works offer glimpses into the daily lives and customs of the people of southern China, which particularly interested his British audiences. He was also a popular and prolific portraitist, producing a number of preparatory studies similar to the present work, including, for example, his 'Study for a portrait of the Marjoribanks family' which sold at Christie's, London, on 21 November 2019, lot 5 (£1,375). This sketch very much exhibits Chinnery's technical fluency with the pen.

George Chinnery (1774-1852)- Portrait Miniature of an East India Company Officer

    Est: $1,500 - $3,000

W 2.75 in. George Chinnery is one of the most colorful English artists to emerge in India during the early years of the Nineteenth Century. First in Madras and later in Calcutta, he became one of a small cadre of successful artists, with countless commissions for miniature and large scale portraits from officers of the British East India Company. However, in 1825, he departed India, leaving behind a cloud of debt, settling in Macao for the rest of his life. Condition: No damage noted. George Chinnery,  British 1774-1852-  Two Sketches: Study of two seated figures; and In the Bazaar, Macao;  each pencil, pen and brown ink on paper, each inscribed in the artist's shorthand, the first 9.4 x 10.3 cm., the second 14.4 x 15.5 cm., two (2).  Provenance:  Private collection of Dr John & Mary Esther O'Driscoll, Kildare, Ireland;  thence by descent to the present owners.  Note:  The present works are characteristic studies by Chinnery, who, as the only western painter in South China in the early to mid 19th century, produced works which are of significant historical interest. Chinnery was based in Macau from 1825 until his death in 1852, making regular visits to Canton (now Guangzhou) until 1832.  These sketches depict figures and scenes that Chinnery encountered during his time in China. One is a snapshot of two figures, possibly haggling, at a market stall at a bazaar in Macau, whilst another appears to depict two seated men playing a game, although their specific actions are tantalisingly obscured from view. This composition reinforces Chinnery's role as an outside observer, documenting the lifestyle and customs of early 19th-century China as he experienced them with a striking immediacy.
