Eduardo Chillida Sold at Auction Prices

Sculptor, b. 1924 - d. 2002

(b San Sebastian, Spain, 1924; d San Sebastian, 2002) Spanish Sculptor. Eduardo Chillida's art is one of timeless grace and seemingly effortless simplicity. Using space as what he described as "a very quick material, so quick that you think there's nothing there" in conjunction with "slow" materials like stone or clay. Chillida's works express an interaction that takes place between the Einsteinian notion of space-time and the tangible and temporal material reality of form. Describing himself as an "architect of the void," Chillida attempted to shape each of these elements so that collectively they express a point of union between them all, a meeting point that is ultimately an expression of the human being's existential position in the world, a totem of identity. Proudly Basque and strongly affiliated with the unique properties of his homeland, Chillida's art blends strength and grace into an articulate expression of a specific sense of place and of a rooted belonging to the world. Three years later he moved back to his home country and soon established himself as an internationally renowned sculptor and graphic artist. EDUARDO CHILLIDA JUANTEGUI (San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002). "Oin-Hatz I", 1973. Woodcut, copy 52/75. Signed and justified in pencil. Measurements: 5,7 x 13,5 cm.(footprint); 26 x 31 cm.(paper); 42 x 49 cm. (frame). As Octavio Paz wrote about this great artist of international fame: "His is a world prior to history and fables, although it is the source of stories and legends always in conflict with itself and its protagonist are not heroes or ideas but forces and elements. A world that reveals itself in contradictory pairs; iron and wind, paper and steel, light and granite, line and mass, the full and the empty. Immersed in this changing reality in which so many dualities and oppositions confront each other, the artist's eye and hand seek a moment of equilibrium. Form is equilibrium, convergence of forces and antagonistic impulses. A pact or war; before our gaze emerges a form suspended in a magnetic space, between gravitation and levitation". Chillida began his training at the School of Architecture of the University of Madrid, but abandoned his studies to devote himself to soccer, as goalkeeper for Real Sociedad. As a result of an injury he was forced to abandon the sport, and it was then that his artistic vocation awakened. He began drawing at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid, and little by little his interest in sculpture grew. It was during his years in Paris when he made his first plaster sculptures, impressed by the archaic Greek sculpture in the Louvre. In the French capital he held his first sculpture exhibition in 1950. It was at this time when he began his rivalry with the sculptor Jorge Oteiza, who accused him of plagiarizing his works. Both with a work linked to the constructivist tradition, however they dealt with different themes. In 1951 he returned definitively to San Sebastian, and made his first work in iron, the material with which he would work for the rest of his life. With the idea that art should be accessible to all, he created numerous public works throughout his life, as well as sculptures for museums around the world. His works dialogue with the environment, so that many are already considered emblematic places for citizens, as is the case with the "Peine del viento" in San Sebastian and the "Puerta de la Libertad" in Barcelona. Throughout his life, Chillida received numerous prizes and awards, including the Carnegie Prize (1965), the Rembrandt Prize (1975), the Wolf Foundation of the Arts (1984/85) and the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts (1987). He was also a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Arts in London, a member of the Imperial Order of Japan, and was awarded the Grand Cross for Humanitarian Merit by the Institution of the same name in Barcelona. Edition Olympia 1972 GmbH. Signed in the stone. Born in San Sebastián to Pedro Chillida and the soprano Carmen Juantegui on 10 January 1924, Eduardo Chillida grew up near the Biarritz Hotel, which was owned by his grandparents. Chillida had been the goalkeeper for Real Sociedad, San Sebastián's La Liga football team, where his knee was so seriously injured that he had five surgeries, ending a promising football career. He then studied architecture at the University of Madrid from 1943 to 1946. In 1947 he abandoned architecture for art, and the next year he moved to Paris, where he set up his first studio and began working in plaster and clay. He never finished his degree and instead began to take private art lessons. He lived in Paris from 1948 to 50 and at Villaines-sous-Bois (Seine-et-Oise) from 1950 to 1955. In 1950 Chillida married Pilar Belzunce and later returned to the San Sebastián area, first to the nearby village of Hernani and in 1959 to the city of his birth, where he remained. He died at his home near San Sebastián at the age of 78.

EDUARDO CHILLIDA JUANTEGUI (San Sebastian, 1924 - 2002). "San Juan de la Cruz". Artika, Chillida-Leku Museum, Planeta, 2007. Copy 714/988. With life-size reproductions of 32 drawings and gravitations of his graphic work. Iron case. Presents marks of use, wear and some lateral damage to the cover. Measurements: 39 x 31 x 4 cm (book); 50 x 39 x 18 cm (box). It is not surprising that the "Spiritual Canticle" by San Juan de la Cruz was one of Chillida's bedside books, given that philosophy, spirituality and mysticism fill his work. This volume brings together two of the Basque artist's great passions: the mystical poems of St. John of the Cross and art. An unrepeatable jewel that blends the two in perfect harmony, combining poetry with the reproduction of 32 drawings and gravitations by Chillida, accompanied by 16 handwritten, intimate and personal quotations on art and spirituality. Chillida trained in Madrid and Paris, and held his first exhibition in the French capital in 1950. Throughout his life he received numerous prizes and awards, including the Carnegie Prize, the Rembrandt Prize, the Wolf Foundation Prize for the Arts and the Prince of Asturias Prize for the Arts. He was also an academician of San Fernando, and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Honorary of the Royal Academy of Arts in London and of the Imperial Order of Japan, and was awarded the Grand Cross for Humanitarian Merit by the Institution of the same name in Barcelona. In addition to his Chillida-Leku Museum in Hernani, he is represented in museums and collections all over the world, such as the Guggenheim in Bilbao, the MOMA in New York, the Reina Sofía in Madrid, the Tate Gallery in London and the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
