Luigi Chialiva, who was born in Caslano (Canton Ticino) in 1842 and died in 1914, was a painter whose talent developed under the influence of the genial atmosphere of his paternal home. He initially undertook architectural studies at the Zurich Polytechnic, but his artistic path took shape when, in 1864, he was taken to Milan by his father. There he devoted himself passionately to the study of painting. After his father's death and several stays in Rome, London and Berlin, Chialiva settled in Écouen, near Paris, with his young wife. This was the place where he cultivated deep and cordial friendships with foreign and French artists, particularly Tissot, Heilbuth and Dawant. His house became a meeting place for Italian painters, writers and musicians, and Chialiva opened the doors of his rich hospitable home with generosity. Chialiva's artistic output, which continued until his death, finds ample space in public and private galleries in the United States. His works are also found in various European collections and museums in cities such as Paris (Luxembourg Museum), Rome, Milan, Turin, and Sheffield. An independent painter, his accurate technique and delicate color characterize his works, which translate the vaguely Georgian aspects of the French and English countryside. Chialiva interpreted the spirit of these landscapes with a gentle but, at the same time, masculine and forthright personality. His realism was always accompanied by an aristocratic sense of selection and execution, giving his works a distinctive and charming character. | (FR) Luigi Chialiva, né à Caslano (canton du Tessin) en 1842 et mort en 1914, est un peintre dont le talent s'est développé sous l'influence de l'atmosphère chaleureuse de la maison paternelle. Il entreprend d'abord des études d'architecture à l'école polytechnique de Zurich, mais sa carrière artistique prend forme lorsque, en 1864, son père l'emmène à Milan. Là, il se consacre avec passion à l'étude de la peinture. Après la mort de son père et plusieurs séjours à Rome, Londres et Berlin, Chialiva s'installe à Écouen près de Paris avec sa jeune épouse. Such an idealised depiction of a rural setting implies the innocence of such an existence, and this is reinforced by the presence of the young sitters. Exhibiting the strong influence of Impressionism, the light pigments powerfully evoke the intense sunlight of a midsummer's day in the artist's native Italy.

Luigi Chialiva è stato tra i più grandi e originali pittori dell'ottocento, perché fu oggettivamente lontano dal genio creativo di altri maestri. La sua pittura sintetizza echi diversi e li fonde in maniera originale. Formatosi nel clima del realismo lombardo fu sensibile anche alla modernità della pittura piemontese. I suoi paesaggi campestri di taglio arcadico, idilliaco e le sue opere 'animaliste', dove greggi, oche, cani, partecipano alla serena operosità del lavoro umano, ebbero un largo successo, in Europa ed anche presso il neonato collezionismo borghese americano.

Signed lower left. Luigi Chialiva, Swiss, 1842 - 1914. From a New Rochelle, NY home. Dimensions: 31" high x 22" wide. Condition: Overall craquelure including an area in the upper right sky with a horizontal crack measuring approx 4 inches wide. Old restoration in which canvas was trimmed at the outer margins and lined. Possible areas of old inpaint throughout the sky. These areas do not fluoresce brightly but do appear to darken under UV light. Possible inpaint is limited to the sky only and do not affect the main image.
