        Oct. 10, 2016

Signed David Chethlahe Paladin Navajo Sand Painting

        Est: $500 - $800

David Paladin (Native American, 1926-1984), Sand Painting entitled "Kiva Fragment", Arizona, ca. mid 20th century CE. A beautiful sand painting by David Chethlahe Paladin, signed by the artist on the lower right. The colorful composition depicts an elaborately dressed shaman engaged in a ceremonial ritual holding various instruments/implements. Paladin was the son of a Navajo mother and a white missionary father, who spent his early years living on the Navajo reservation near Chinle, Arizona and became a Navajo visionary, shaman, healer, and artist. When Paladin attended the Santa Fe Indian School he resisted artistic instruction; however, he later attended the Chicago Art Institute where Marc Chagall encouraged him to draw from his native heritage and paint subjects inspired by creation myths. In Paladin's words, "My underlying philosophy is that the folklore and legends of the Native Americans serve as my point of departure. I do not plan to specifically illustrate the legends but to capture the spirit behind them, the evolution, the creation, the structure of the universe as experienced by a native people. Sharing in that manner is to share more than the concepts at an intellectual level. It is also sharing the spiritual concepts with the viewer. Marc Chagall explained how he dreamed the images from his mythology. And he said, 'My God, as an Indian, why don't you just go to sleep and paint what you dream?' That meant more to me than anything else in my life." (http://davidpaladin.olicentral.com/Artist/comments.htm) For additional information about this artist see "Painting the Dream: The Shamanic Life and Art of David Chethlahe Paladin" Foreward by Rev. Dr. Matthew Fox (2003). Nicely mounted in wood frame. Size: 16" L x 16" W (40.6 cm x 40.6 cm); framed 17" L x 17" W (43.2 cm x 43.2 cm) Provenance: Ex - Himrod estate, Anaheim, CA.
