TASS Window #1085: The New German Divisions. ca. 1944.

        Est: $1,700 - $2,000

ARTIST: MIKHAIL MIKHAILOVICH CHEREMNYKH (1890-1962) SIZE: 42 x 52 1/2 in./106.7 x 133.3 cm DESCRIPTION: "The New German Divisions," TASS Window No. 1085 proclaims. "Hitler Youth instructor Axmann formally reported to Hitler that of youth born in 1928, 70% have been dispatched to the army (newspapers say)." The caption below can be read as "Two feet off the pottie," emphasized by the mocking addition of the chamber pots these Hitler Youth have attached to their rifles; colloquially, "knee high to a mosquito" – an old Russian expression referring to self-aggrandizing young people who arrogantly assert their opinions, despite their lack of life experience. In 1919, Cheremnykh established the ROSTA Studio in Moscow, cofounded the satirical magazine Krokodil, and was the set designer for the State Theater of Opera in Minsk, before helping to organize the TASS studio in Moscow, designing its first poster in June 1941 and receiving the Order of Stalin medal in 1942. This is a hand-colored pochoir. (War; Propaganda)

Condition B+: replaced losses, repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins, some affecting image; creases and restoration along unobtrusive vertical and horizontal folds. "This state-sponsored poster . . . makes vividly clear the Soviets'' continuing effort to discredit the major state enemies, Czarist officers and Russian clergy of all faiths. The top hat, symbolizing upper-class wealth, is dropping gold coins to the greedy priests, rabbi and Czarist officials. The words printed above the hat ... are ironic: they negate the sense of the quotation from the New Testament, Acts II, ''The Holy Spirit descends on the apostles,'' sarcastically suggesting that priestly piety is a sham" (Magnes p.86). One of at least two versions, this one is the rare, larger lithograph. A smaller chromo-lithograph version exists from 1932. Magnes 35.

        Est: $300 - $400

CHEREMNYKH, MIKHAIL MIKHAILOVICH (RUSSIAN 1890-1962), Anti-Religious Drawing, circa 1920s, gouache on paper, 32 x 24 cm (12 1/2 x 9 1/2 in), signed on front. LOT NOTES Cheremnykh studied with K. A. Korovin and S. V. Maliutin at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture from 1911 to 1917. He taught at the V. I. Surikov Moscow Art Institute from 1949 to 1962, becoming a professor there in 1950. Cheremnykh was the creator of the OKNA ROSTA and one of the creators of the OKNA TASS. He worked for several newspapers and for the magazines Krokodil (from 1922), Bezbozhnik u Stanka, and Smekhach. Cheremnykh’s work is rich in satiric allegory and symbolism, tending toward grotesque solutions that have a tremendous effect upon the viewer. In his posters and caricatures dealing with international and domestic topics, he frequently used montages of drawings devoted to related subjects and different graphic techniques. Cheremnykh also worked as a book illustrator and as a stage artist. A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1942, he was also awarded the Order of the Badge of Honor and various medals. PROVENANCE INFORMATION The current lot comes from the collection of the esteemed collector and art critic Viktor Kholodkov (1948-2015), who fulfilled his passion for books, avant-garde design and paper memorabilia by devoting his life to collecting and dealing of prominent works of Russian graphic art of the first half of the 20th century. Kholodkov acquired a multitude of books and artworks throughout the decades, meticulously labeling and archiving every single item. Many came directly from the most preeminent artists of the time, as well as from their families and estates. He also possessed a vast number of drawings from the famous collection of another avant-garde enthusiast, Nikolai Khardzhiev. After leaving the USSR in 1989 and settling in California, Viktor continued his work as a Soviet art dealer and critic, actively publishing various articles and contributing to several major Russian avant-garde exhibitions across the U.S., such as the 1991 exhibition Russia Under Fire in the 40s on the West Coast and the 1992 Guggenheim exhibition The Great Utopia: The Russian and Soviet Avant-Garde. Kholodkov also contributed to the archives of the biggest American istitutions. His unique selection of over 2000 Russian sheet music covers was acquired by The Library of Congress, and an extensive amount of material related to VKhUTEMAS is now at the J. Paul Getty Museum.

        Est: $1,500 - $2,500

Tovarish, bditel’nost’ utroi… [Comrade, Triple Your Vigilance…], an IZOGIZ Windows series poster by Mikhail Cheremnykh. Published by OGIZ-IZOGIZ, Moscow-Leningrad, [1933]. 108 x 81 cm. This poster was part of the propaganda campaign instigated by the Stalin’s call for ?revolutionary vigilance” (in his ?Results of the Five-Year Plan” speech, 1933). Stalin asserted that ?former have-beens have wormed their way into our plants and factories, … and, principally, into the collective farms and state farms”, and that these ?remnants of the hostile classes” will try to wreck and plunder the Soviet economy. Former kulaks were seen as particularly dangerous, as ?they can play on private property habits and survivals among the collective farmers, the individual farmers of yesterday who are now members of collective farms”. One can’t help but note that continued use of the Agitation Window format through the Soviet years was founded on the success of the ROSTA Windows operation ran by Cheremnykh and Mayakovsky in 1919-1921. For more on the artist, see lot 11.

Published by Glavpolitprosvet (the Directorate of the Enlightenment Commissariat tasked with the education of the adult population, with the emphasis on political education - see also notes to lot 7), Moscow, 1922. 70 x 106 cm.Mayakovsky’s authorship could be guessed without scouring the literature; just in case, we have located the poster’s caption in The Complete Works of Vladimir Mayakovsky, GIKhL, Moscow, 1957 (vol. 4, p. 196). The accompanying commentary identifies Cheremnykh as the poster artist. The pair was the driving force behind the ROSTA Display Windows posters production; in 1922, the poet and the artist reunited to work on a series of Famine Relief posters for Glavpolitprosvet.

CHEREMNYKH, M. Once Upon a Time the Bourgeoisie Lived Well…, 1919

        Est: $600 - $900

Zhili sebe pozhivali burzhui… [Once Upon a Time the Bourgeoisie Lived Well…], a poster by Mikhail Cheremnykh (1890-1962, People’s Artist of the Russian Federation). Published by VTsIK Publishing, Moscow, 1919. 71 x 54.5 cm.Cheremnykh is a major name in the history of the Soviet poster art, primarily because of his important role in the ROSTA Windows operation. This simply executed early poster could be, to a degree, considered a direct forerunner of his ROSTA posters, as it first demonstrates the artist’s ability to convey a political message in a humorous and imaginative manner. The poster is organized as a sequence of cartoons. Former ruling classes try to re-enslave workers and peasants with the help of foreign troops, but the working men join the Red Army, defeat the enemy, and live happily ever after. One remarkable thing about Cheremnykh’s design is that it includes a figure easily recognizable as Lenin. Cheremnykh was likely a bit concerned about Lenin’s reaction to being depicted as a cartoon character, even a sympathetic one - but he was reassured, on at least one occasion, by Lenin himself (at the same time, Lenin warned the artist not to try the same with Clara Zetkin, as she may take umbrage). The incident is reported by Stephen White in The Bolshevik Poster, who found it mentioned in a memoir by the engraver N. Pavlov. White discusses the posters produced by Cheremnykh for VTsIK in late 1918 and 1919 in considerable detail, and considers his work highly influential. Notably, Deni’s early works reuse several of Cheremnykh’s design ideas. The Siberian-born artist was a graduate of the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture (class of 1917). He produced posters through his whole artistic career and was popular as a caricaturist. He was also an accomplished book illustrator - his works in this genre often exhibit a high degree of sophistication and would provide a jarring contrast when put side to side with his early VTsIK posters.
