Lim Ah Cheng (b. 1968) Ancient Horses Series 5, 2001

        Est: RM15,000 - RM28,000

In Ancient Horses Series 5, Lim Ah Cheng vividly depicts the powerful movements of a herd of galloping horses rendered in unison. The rhythmic forms of roaming horses occupying the canvas were strengthened using dark colours, providing contrast with various hues of brown, yellow and white. The artist injects energy and power into his horses with bold brushwork and calligraphic lines, conflating art forms derived from Chinese ink painting and the expressive style of the Fauvists. Lim Ah Cheng graduated with a diploma in Graphic Design at the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1988-1991, with a simultaneous certificate in communications (storybook design and illustrations) from the Tatsun Studio in 1990-1991. He trained under master calligrapher Chung Chen Chuan. He won the Initiative Award in the Galeri Shah Alam Open in 1997, and the 3rd Prize in the National Open in 1998. He has participated in art fairs in England, Singapore and Malaysia. His first solo, of equestrian paintings, was at Elle Six gallery in 2002. He had two solos in Singapore, in 2004 and 2008. Known as a symbol of strength, power, and success, horses have been the focus of Lim Ah Cheng's oeuvre. Painted with forceful strokes, the artist translated the impressions of a herd of galloping horses into a powerful image of movement, endurance, and vitality. Located at the top of the artwork is a red coloured circle which not only symbolizes the sun, but also forms a traditional seal. Upon observation, the seal is divided into four sections, each contains the early script of the word 'horse', from different dynasties. The traditional Chinese character of the horse resembles the shape of the majestic creature. The artist's works conflate a myriad of art forms derived from Chinese painting and the expressive style of the Fauvists. Lim Ah Cheng graduated with a diploma in Graphic Design at the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1988-1991, with a simultaneous certificate in communications (storybook design and illustrations) from the Tatsun Studio in 1990-1991. It may be more difficult for a painter to orchestrate the rhythm (‘movement') of music on canvas than a conductor in actual philharmonic orchestra setting. The variations in play of what is obviously a static scene of fixed seated musicians with different instruments are achieved by Lim Ah Cheng through a dexterous play of line, colours and figure abstractions. It was a visit to the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra performance in 2008 that set the versatile artist who is as adept with Chinese ink as with acrylic and oil, on his art of musical interludes. Lim Ah Cheng graduated with a diploma in Graphic Design at the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1988-1991, with a simultaneous certificate in communications (storybook design and illustrations) from the Tatsun Studio in 1990-1991. Based on its title and its close-up depiction of Buddha’s head, this is an artwork embodying Buddhist principles, and the muted light shades give off a sense of serenity and calm. In painting horses, for which Lim Ah Cheng has been happily typecast, there is nothing more adrenalin-charged than its sheer power: the thundering of the hooves, the speed and strength, the determined and persistent stamina. This is one equestrian work which Lim Ah Cheng prefers the abstract capturing the movement and playing with the swirl of colours scrambled from green, blue, yellow and white, creating an imaginary horse dance of sorts. Incidentally, his other pet subject is that of orchestral interlude, of music and dance.Lim Ah Cheng had his early informal, irregular art training under Chinese ink calligrapher Chung Chen Chuan from 1995-1999. He received his Diploma from the Malaysian Institute of Art in 1988-92, and Certificate in Communications (Storyboard Design and Illustration) from the Tatsun Studio in 1990-1991. He won an Incentive Award in the Shah Alam Art Gallery Open in 1997, and 3rd Prize in the National Day Open in 1998. But it took a long time before he was confident enough to stage his first solo, of his 1996-2002 works of his horses, in an exhibition titled, Challenging Horses, at the now-defunct art gallery, Elle Six. Another notable all-horse exhibition was at Art Accent, called Metamorphosis in 2009. Two solos in Singapore followed, namely, Melody in Harmony (Dynasties Antique and Art Gallery, 2004) and The Passage (Momentous Art Gallery, 2008).

By studying powerful fluid movements of horses, the artist depicts with exceptional prowess a group of majestic steeds galloping in rhythmic motion, skillfully combining “Oriental and Western influences in oil showing depth and layering with a contemporary touch, while infusing elements of Chinese art in terms of brushstrokes, atmosphere, space and imagination of empty space, with a philosophy of simplicity.”   Lim Ah Cheng received his Diploma in Malaysia Institute of Art, Kuala Lumpur (1988-1992) and studied under the tutelage of Mr Chong Chen Chuan, Chairman of Calligraphy (1995-1999).
