Born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, Nan Cheney spent part of her childhood in Havana, Cuba, then studied art at Tulane University in Louisiana. She completed the "Art as Applied to Medicine" program at Johns Hopkins University (1921-23) where she worked under medical artist Max Brodel. She was a well-known BC portrait painter as well as a medical artist for the University of British Columbia, and McGill University. In 1924 she married Dr. Hill H. Cheney and in 1937 they moved to Vancouver. Cheney worked with Group of Seven members Lawren Harris and Jock MacDonald, accompanying them on sketching trips. She also enjoyed a close friendship with Emily Carr in the period before Carr's work had gained general acceptance. Carr’s relationship with Cheney dated back to 1930 but did not flourish until 1937 when Cheney moved from Ottawa to Vancouver. Cheney collected material about Emily Carr until December 1979. They wrote hundreds of letters between them which are now kept at UBC Press. These letters make up the foundation of the book, "Dear Nan: Letters of Emily Carr, Nan Cheney, and Humphrey Toms". The book reveals Nan Cheney's critical thoughts on the Vancouver art scene of the day and relates gossip about the local art community. Cheney died in Vancouver in 1985. Her work is included in the collections of the National Gallery of Canada (which holds Cheney's portrait of Carr) and the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
