Lin (1915-2002) was a prominent Chinese-Canadian surgeon who received his medical degree from McGill University in Montreal and post-graduate training from Cornell Medical Center and New York Hospital. He was a Professor of Surgery at Nanking Central Hospital from 1946 - 1948 when he returned to Montreal to practice and teach at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Among his many affiliations and associations, he was a member of the Overseas Chinese Commission, President of the Montreal Chinese Hospital and Founding President of the Canadian Chinese Cultural Society. He was involved in many charitable organizations and was President of the Chinese Benevolent Association, as well as a Life Member and Past President of the Montreal Central Lions Club. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and charitable work, Dr Lin was awarded the Order of Canada in 1986.This collection of paintings was acquired through purchases and gifts in appreciation of Dr Lin's many years of dedication to the health and welfare of others and for his promotion of Chinese culture.Estimate: $200-300

      LANDSCAPE Hanging scroll, ink on paper 25.4 x 31.3 cm. (10 x 12 1/3 in.) Signed: Chen Yu Dated seventh month, guihai year of the Hongwu era (1383) One seal of the artist: Jing Cheng Ren Two collectors' seals, including: Song Luo (1634-1713): Shang Qiu Song Shi Jia Cang; and Qiu Dong Inscription above the painting by Xu Hang (1797-1867), noting that this painting by Chen Yu was once in the collection of Song Luo, with one seal and dated seventh year of the Daoguang era (1827) One collector's seal of Weng Tonghe (1830-1904) above the painting: Weng Shu Ping Jian Cang Shu Hua Yin NOTES (US$5,200-6,500) Note: 1. Chen Yu was a notive of Jinling. His sobriquet names include Zhongxing and Jingcheng, and he was generally known as Master Jingcheng. He did not serve in the Yuan court but at the start of the Ming dynasty was a government official, assisting the first emperor. He was a literary man who also painted, specialising in landscapes and portraiture, and his subjects included the Hongwu emperor.
