影沈寒水 Nothing in the Heart 簽名雕刻背面:李真 Li Chen 3/8 2005 Engraved reverse Li Chen in Chinese and English, numbered 3/8 and dated 2005 《影沈寒水》展現的清淨之心,源於生命中的深刻體驗。 Nothing in the Heart reveals a pure heart inspired by profound life experiences. Li Chen traveled along the Central Cross-Island Highway in central Taiwan, passing through Tienhsiang and Taroko, and immersed himself in the icy waters and hot springs of the mountains. The terrain here is steep, with cliffs on both sides froming a deep gorge; looking up, one sees majestic peaks soaring into the clouds, while looking down reveals shimmering undercurrents. When mist envelops the area, the gorge resembles an unfathomable abyss, evoking a deep sense of tranquility within. The figure in the artwork seems to exist in a dreamlike state amidst the clouds and mist of Taroko, with limbs submerged in water, as if merging with nature. The artist skillfully employs sculptural techniques to convey the cold texture of the water, the serenity of sleep, and the dynamic flow of light. Through the interplay of solid and liquid, the artist successfully captures the exquisite balance between reality and illusion to exist in a dreamlike state amidst the clouds and mist of Taroko, with limbs submerged in water, as if merging with nature. From a distance, it appears as solid and robust as a rock, while up close, it is as delicate as porcelain. This time, 'Dragon–Riding Bodhisattva,' 'Wisdom Bodhisattva & Fulfillment Bodhisattva' all come from the artist's 'The Greatness of Spirit' series created between 2001 and 2003.This series can be considered as Li Chen at the age of 40's, characterized by abundant creative energy. It embodies the spirit of Buddhism and represents the attainment of a profound realization. Li Chen's art embodies Eastern Zen philosophy, shaped by the minimalist style of Western art. Through the integration of Zen thought and contemporary art, it promotes the re-evolution of Asian contemporary sculpture.

LI CHEN (Taiwanese, born 1963) Visiting Fairyland 2004 bronze, ed. 8/8 signed, dated and editioned verso: Li Chen/ 8/8/ 2004 117 x 96 x 60cm PROVENANCE: Ode to Art Gallery, Singapore Private collection, Melbourne EXHIBITIONS: Li Chen: In Search Of Spiritual Space, National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China, 2008 (another example) LITERATURE: Li Chen: In Search Of Spiritual Space, National Art Museum of China, Beijing, China, 2008, p.106 (illus, another example) OTHER NOTES: Li Chen is a celebrated Taiwanese sculptor whose work captivates through its spiritual depth and minimalist aesthetics. Known for his large-scale sculptures that draw heavily on Buddhist principles, Li Chen explores themes of serenity, balance, and the human spirit. His profound devotion to Buddhism is unmistakable in his work, as his sculptures embody a sense of inner tranquillity and enlightenment. Born in 1963 in Yunlin, Taiwan, Li Chen's artistic journey began early. He pursued arts and crafts during high school and delved into modern sculpture in the early 1980s under the mentorship of Hsieh Tong-liang. (1) While contemporary sculptural forms initially caught his attention, it was traditional Buddhist figurative sculpture that truly resonated with him. His early experiences crafting Buddhist icons were pivotal, providing him with technical skills and a deep understanding of materiality. Reflecting on this foundational period, Li Chen recounts: "For about six months, I created traditional Buddhist icons in a factory. After my military service, I became an assistant to a sculptor and continued making Buddhist sculptures. However, I considered it craft, not art, so I didn't sign my work." (2) This reflection reveals the internal tension Li Chen felt between the spiritual reverence of the traditional forms and his desire for personal artistic expression. By 1992, he began to sense the need to transcend traditional Buddhist sculpture, although the process of breaking away was not immediate. "I only produced one piece a year until 1997 because the traditional was a burden-it's difficult to break away from. Tradition is safe," (3) he notes. It took him seven years to develop his own distinct sculptural voice, a journey he describes as both arduous and liberating. "From that moment on, I felt truly free," (4) he explains, marking his shift from crafting religious icons to creating works infused with his personal vision. Li Chen's distinctive style is characterized by smooth, rounded forms and his use of black, white, and bronze. These elements give his sculptures a timeless, almost ethereal quality, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalism. His attention to detail is meticulous, with each piece reflecting an unwavering dedication to technique. As his body of work has evolved, there is a noticeable shift from the intricate detail of his early sculptures to the more simplified, yet profound, forms of his later pieces. The simplification in his work is reminiscent of the famous words of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, the author of The Little Prince: "Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away." This philosophy resonates strongly when comparing Li Chen's early detailed works to the more abstract forms of his later pieces, where he strips away unnecessary complexity to reveal the essence of the subject. One of the standout pieces from Li Chen's later period is Visiting Fairyland 2004, lot 33, part of his Spiritual Journey through the Great Ether series. This series marks a significant departure from traditional sculpture, as Li Chen delves into more personal and metaphysical themes. Visiting Fairyland exemplifies this shift, blending Eastern philosophy with modern sculptural techniques. The title suggests a figure from an imaginary, mystical realm, evoking a sense of wonder and playfulness. The character appears approachable, embodying the lighter aspects of human nature. It's as though Li Chen invites us to find joy in the simplicity of life, encouraging us not to take ourselves too seriously. In Visiting Fairyland and his broader body of work, Li Chen melds the sacred and the secular, the traditional and the modern, achieving a harmony that speaks to both the soul and the senses. His sculptures, with their serene simplicity and spiritual resonance, invite us into a space of contemplation, encouraging a deeper connection with ourselves and the world around us. The work featured in this auction, Visiting Fairyland, is from Li Chen’s most recognizable series “Spiritual Journey Through the Great Ether.” Another piece, Soothing Breezes Floating Clouds, from the same series commanded a price of € 280,533 (approx. SGD 410,783) in Sotheby’s auction in 2023. This sculpture portrays a blissful figure, small in volume yet filled with lively energy. Crafted in fluid lines and curved surfaces, the work impresses people with a comforting sense of aesthetics that can evoke “a realm of innermost emotion of riding the wind and becoming one with nature.” The delicate and glossy texture of bronze triggers the desire to touch the work to further feel the spirituality that the artist wanted to convey through the contrast of light and heavy. Most of Li Chen’s art is created from the subject of Buddhist philosophy or thoughts, founding on the mixture of transcendent and worldly to reach a balance between traditional Eastern aesthetics and contemporary discourse of sculpture coming from the West. He pursues unity of the material and spiritual, with the sharing of life energy to demonstrate the Chinese inner stature that impacts one’s sense of touch beyond purely vision.

This work explores the realm of oriental philosophy depicting a hermit exploring the spiritual world with a horsetail whisk. The figure stands on one foot on top of a snowy mountain with a serene complexion and subtle smile on his face. The balanced form of the figure suggests an optimum psychological state in its unique aesthetic depiction. This liberates the mind of viewers in their search for a utopian state.

Engraved on the back Li Chen in English, numbered 3/8 and dated 1999, with one seal of the artist 《大士》是李真「虛空中的能量」系列的代表作之一,2001年曾受邀參加美國紐約蘇富比總部「無疆界的中國」大型聯展,2007年更於第52屆威尼斯雙年展展出。 The "Avalokitesvara" is one of the representative series of Li Chen's artworks named "Energy in Emptiness". In 2001, this piece was invited by the Sotheby's Headquarters in New York, U.S.A. to attend a huge exhibition called "China without Border." Moreover, it was also displayed in the 52nd Venice Biennial in 2007. The work "Avalokitesvara" shows a full round face with mercy, humbleness and sincerity. It might look clumsy at first yet the misted facial expression conveys joy, peace and harmony. Besides offering people an innocent, clear and clean sense, it also has an abundance of energy which has an expansive effect. Between the limit and the heaviness, virtual and real senses are endowed. These are implications of the wisdom of tai xu (it means vision) which applies the language of various body postures to communicate with the audience in a simple and direct manner. In terms of the relation between sculptural textures and lines, Li Chen's work demonstrates his superb skills to combine them. It might look simple, but in the light and shadow, it is full of changes. Still, there is a sense of delicate spirit in the perfect design. With the left hand holding a clean bottle, the right hand's fingers making a lotus gesture, the sculpture stands tall with solemnity and dignity and gives a calm and secure feeling. The use of Chinese ink-black color with bright-misted approach creates an unique quality that makes audience feel the heaviness and lightness at the same time. It is a fine piece of artwork which arouses intense interests. Globalization is accelerating communication and interaction among the multitudes of human cultures and the boundaries between existing cultures are disappearing rapidly. While globalization is a universal concept that makes life easier for all, it does not unify cultures. In that sense the individualism of unique cultures is more important and precious now than it has even been before. The artist Li Chen was born in central Taiwan, and in his expansive studies of Buddhist and Taoist scriptures he seeks truth beyond the material world. He uses sculpture to convey the spirit and allusions of Eastern culture, taking the idea of "Emptiness", or "Void", as his central creative aesthetic concept. These are important concepts in Chinese Buddhist and Taoist cultures. But "Emptiness" in Buddhism does not mean "Nothing". Instead it connotes a vast and calm understanding of one's existence in the world. In the same vein, there is a Taoist saying that goes: "When emptiness is broken, the earth loses its balance"; it describes an extreme state of disturbing the balance of things as pursued though the idea of interconnectivity. Li Chen's sculptures investigate the energy of such emptiness, and his sculptural forms are not empty, but instead are full of a vital energy. He achieves this through an energetic and spiritual style that uses exaggerated shapes and dark black lacquer to create a spiritual matter that people can absorb. But the sculptures also convey emotions that are sweet, romantic, happy and satisfied. For this reason, though some of his works may be massive, they don't appear oppressive and heavy. Instead they seem to be floating in the air, exhibiting an alluring ambiguity between lightness and heaviness. Li Chen also makes breakthroughs in the already-existing styles of Buddhist sculpture that have existed over thousands of years. He alters the thick and full Tang Dynasty (A.D. 618–907) style Buddhist sculptures and the elegantly spiritual characteristics of Song Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279) sculpture, reaching an extreme simplification in both face and line. He extracts elements of China's five thousand years of history and culture, including Chinese immortals, Buddhas, dragons, fairy tales and folk tales, etc. and takes them a step further, creating contemporary artistic work from them. He successfully combines classical and contemporary perspectives and creates works that are unprecedented and unique forms, endowing new life to Eastern sculpture.

Pure Land Engraved Li Chen in English and Chinese, numbered 5/8, dated Owing to Li Chen’s rebirth of energy in a spiritual form, the sculpture is highlighted in an exaggerated and lacquered black object to display a sweet, romantic, joyful, and satisfactory spiritual concept. Hence, despite Li’s art is in gigantic form, but never heavy but flowing in the sky to transmit a “heavy and light” feeling, and a perfect fusion of spiritual energy and material energy. Li Chen’s art, determined to break from the traditional thousand-year religious Buddhist formality of its structures, results in transforming Tang Dynasty’s Buddhist round and complete figurative sculpture and the Song Dynasty’s beautiful spirit and unique characteristics into simplistic sculpture’s smiling face and lines. In addition, Li obtains the cultural elements from the 5000 years of Chinese history, such as spirits, Buddha, dragon, fables, and legends, blending contemporary artistic elements and materials into fusion of tradition and modernity. Hence, Li’s work displays an unprecedented unique style and panorama to endow the Eastern sculpture with a new life.

The sculpture exclusively adopts a silvering material and creates a mirror-like inverting effect. Clear Soul figuratively suggests that only a pure and spotless soul, such as that of a newborn baby, may freely fly over the serene and clear lake. The infant-like Clear Soul actually means freedom from desires or demands, negating mortal emotions or desires, complying with the rules of nature, and facing and enjoying life with the most genuine attitude. Clear Soul seems as if a mind of concerns has seemingly cast off the concerns of mortal toil; it is substantial but feels weightless. Life is real and yet full of illusions, which are doomed to vanish as time goes by. This philosophy can be compared to a mirror-like inverting effect. Pure and spotless Clear Soul, which is the boundary of Buddhism, will enjoy the freedom of flying over the serene and clear lake. Li abandons the over-complicated or lines in his sculptures and the perfectly round and unsophisticated image of figure always bring the viewers the purest movement through looking at these simple works.

Why are we here? And why do we leave? Li Chen uses the image of a Buddha or Bodhisattva to hint at reincarnation, suggesting that all the changes that happen in the universe, and the process of birth and death in human existence, along with all other phenomena, are determined by fate or karma. However, in contrast to the serene, imposing Buddha figure, Li Chen also, and quite deliberately, emphasizes the importance of entering and existing in this world; as he sees it, the process whereby life continues to exist in this world (and through which we enter the world) is itself of immeasurable value. The innocent baby represents the striving of human beings in this world for the ultimate; the use of gold coloration for the baby points up the perfection of this ideal state. By placing the wriggling, adorable baby in the arms of the quiescent Buddha, a contrast is created between "fate" and "entering the world."
