Il a organisé une autre exposition personnelle en 1956 et a publié « Chen Banding's Painting Collection » en 1959. En 1986, Rong Baozhai a édité et publié « Chen Banding's Flower Painting Book ». Chen peint des paysages, des personnages, des fleurs, des animaux et d'autres sujets, parmi lesquels la peinture de fleurs est la plus caractéristique. Il s'inspire largement des méthodes des dynasties Ming (1368-1644) et Qing (1644-1912), qu'il intègre à son style artistique personnel unique.

LOT NOTES: Chen Banding (1876 - 1970) courtesy name Jingshan, pseudonym name Banding, is a Chinese modern painter, founder of First Beijing Painting Academy. His works combine the style of the Shanghai School and the Beijing School, forming a "Chen Style" style of small freehand. Chen Banding was born in a family of Chinese medicine practitioners in Keqiao Town , Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province in the Qing Dynasty. His young parents died and his family was poor. When he was 15 years old, he came to Lanxi Yiqianzhuang as an apprentice. He only came into contact with painting and calligraphy. In 1895, he went to Shanghai with his uncle Wu Yin , working in Yan Xinhou's home, and engaged in rubbing and other work. In 1906, he been invited to Beijing, and gained fame with the help of Wu Changshuo. In 1917, he met Qi Baishi. In 1918, Chen Banding became a professor at the National Peking Art College. In 1920, he joined the Chinese Painting Research Society hosted by Jinbei Building. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he and Qi Baishi painted the Songshi Peony, Mao Zedong signed it, and presented the painting to Indonesian President Sukarno. This work was later circulated back to China and was auctioned in 2003 for 20.35 million yuan. In 1954, according to his proposal, the government established the National Academy of Fine Arts (now the Institute of Fine Arts of the China Academy of Art). In 1957, he and Ye Gongyi founded the Beijing Painting Academy. He passed away in 1970.

When he was 20 years old, he went to Shanghai to study and met the famous painters Ren Bonian (1840?1896) and Wu Changshuo (1844-1927). He later became a disciple of Wu Changshuo., learning various aspects of poetry, calligraphy, painting and seal making. He went to Beijing after he was 40 years old and worked in the Peking University Library. In 1931, he was appointed as a professor at Beijing Art College. While living in Beijing, he developed friendships with artists such as Chen Shizeng (1876-1923) and Qi Baishi (1864-1957). In the 1940s, he held personal exhibitions. He once served as vice president of the Beijing Chinese Painting Academy (now Beijing Painting Academy), director of the Chinese Artists Association, and president of the Chinese Painting Research Association. He held another solo exhibition in 1956 and published "Chen Banding's Painting Collection" in 1959. In 1986, Rong Baozhai edited and published "Chen Banding's Flower Painting Book". Chen paints landscapes, figures, flowers, animals and other subjects, among which flower painting is the most distinctive. He widely draws on the methods of Ming and Qing dynasty, and blends them into his unique personal artistic style.

FROM THE COLLECTION OF CHANG CHUN (LOTS 6102-6137) Chang Chun (1889-1990) was a prominent figure in modern Chinese politics. Earlier in his life, he dedicated himself to serving the revolutionary cause and was instrumental in the founding of the Republic of China. He took on the duties of foreign diplomacy and provincial affairs, and heroically engaged in the Second Revolution, Northern Expedition, and the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression. The highlight of this collection is the gifted writings of eminent Republic officials, spanning from The National Protection War to the Second Sino-Japanese War. With works by notable men including Li Liejun, Wu Zhihui and Dai Jitao, this bespoke curation unravels the gripping narrative of Chinese history. Taking center stage is the writings of Huang Xing, gifted in the aftermath of the Second Revolution. Referred by Chinese political Tan Yankai as Huang’s last work executed before his death, it attests to the utmost rarity of the piece. A savant in arts, Chang began his lifelong journey as a refined connoisseur in the late 1920s. The Collection of Chang Chun made its debut first this spring at Sotheby’s , focusing on artworks by renowned Beijing and Shanghai artists of the 1930s.
