SERGEI CHEKHONIN Two lithographs with hand coloring of still lifes.

            Est: $2,000 - $3,000

SERGEI CHEKHONIN Two lithographs with hand coloring of still lifes. Both lithographs with hand coloring in watercolor, circa 1915-20. Both 470x375 mm; 18 1/2x14 3/4 inches, wide margins. Both an edition of 100. Both signed and numbered in pencil, lower margin. Very good impressions of these scarce lithographs. Chekhonin (1878-1936) was born in Valdayka, between Moscow and Saint Petersburg, the son a railroad machinist who worked on the Nicholas Railroad. At the age of fifteen he had to begin earning his own living and worked as a clerk and draftsman. In 1896 he arrived in Petrograd, where he studied at the Drawing School of the Imperial Society for the Encouragement of the Arts until 1897 and at the Tenishev school until 1900, where he was a pupil of Ilya Repin. Shortly after the 1905 Russian Revolution, with which he flirted, he turned to graphic design. At first he worked as a cartoonist in a satirical magazine (1905–06), and then began designing books, which brought him considerable success. In the 1910s, he was considered among the most important contemporary Russian book artists. He served subsequently as artistic director of the State Porcelain Factory in Leningrad in 1918–1923 and again in 1925–1927. In 1928, Chekhonin left the Soviet Union and emigrated to Paris. There he worked in the field of artistic industry and stage set design. At the end of his career, he lived in Germany, where he continued to pursue theater, porcelain and book design.

Stains (numerous stains to cover). Notation in pen on front flyleaf. Inked stamps on back flyleaf and back cover. Several leaves partly detached. Closed and open tears edges of cover and several leaves, some restored. Sergey Chekhonin (Сергей Васильевич Чехонин), influential Soviet Russian graphic artist, painter, and ceramic artist; member of the "Mir Iskusstva" ("Мир искусства": "World of Art") movement. Developed the idea of using porcelain vessels as a medium for disseminating Soviet propaganda. Became politically active following the revolution of 1905, and maintained close ties with revolutionary circles. This involvement was expressed through the political caricatures he created for magazines and the books he illustrated and designed. In the years 1918-23, he became the first artistic director following the October Revolution (1917) of the "State Porcelain Factory" (formerly the "Tsarist Porcelain Factory") that operated under the auspices of the Fine Arts Department of the Narkompros – the People's Commissariat for Education, under the directorship of Anatoly Lunacharsky. Chekhonin adhered to a Constructivist design concept that conformed with the spirit of the times under the dictates of the new ideology. He was at one point replaced by Nikolay Punin, but returned to his position as the institution's artistic director in the years 1925-27. As a graphic designer, he was responsible for the design of currency bills and postage stamps, and was a partner in the design of the flag of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR). Left Russia in 1928, and took up residence in France and Germany, where he continued to design ceramic vessels and theater sets and illustrate and design books.

Sergei Vasil'evic Chekhonin, Russian 1878-1936- Projet de tissue; collage, signed lower right, 18.5x26.5cm Provenance: Tajan, Paris 14 May 2014 lot 289, where purchased by the present owner. Note: Chekhonin was a painter, illustrator and designer for the theater and of porcelain. A student of Ilya Repin and Princess Tenisheva, he became an active member of Mir Iskusstva while engaged as an illustrator which brought him public recognition. He served as Artistic Director of the State Porcelain Factory from 1918 to 1923, whose creations from this period are still much admired by connoisseurs today. The artist likely remains the most important point of reference for the creation of post-revolutionary porcelain.
