ULPIANO CHECA Y SANZ, (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "The courtship". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. It has two patches on the back. Measurements: 54 x 73 cm; 83 x 102 cm (frame). Scene of classic appearance where the courtship between two mockingbirds is represented, as if it were a reverie, they are seated on a bench, in what seems to be an idyllic garden. Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873, at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1876 he went to the San Fernando Academy, where he became a disciple of Federico de Madrazo. When he finished, in 1884, he obtained a pension to study at the Spanish Academy in Rome. During his third year he sends a work that will earn him the first medal at the National Exhibition of 1887, and second at the Universal Exhibition of Vienna in 1888. At the end of 1887 he took up residence in Paris, where he exhibited regularly in the Salons, achieving success when his work was awarded in 1890. There he combines painting with his work as a graphic correspondent in "La Ilustración Española y Americana". At the beginning of the century he settled in the south of France, in Dax, where he remained until his death in 1916. It is important to highlight how Checa's work influenced the adventure films of Hollywood in the 50s and 60s. Film directors such as Stanley Kubrick ("Spartacus"), Mario Bonnard ("The Last Days of Pompeii"), Mervyn LeRoy ("Quo Vadis"), William Wyler ("Ben-Hur") or, more recently, Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") were inspired by his works for their set designs, costumes, mass movement studies and characterization of characters. In fact, he also influenced earlier filmmakers, since in the 1930s and 1940s his work showed directors the possibility of creating visual effects of depth and perspective unusual in cinema until then. During his lifetime, in 1901, he collaborated with Henry Sienkiewick on the set and costume design for the theatrical version of the novel "Quo Vadis". In fact, part of Checa's work is based on literature, especially this novel, "Ben-Hur" and "Les Miserables". Works by Ulpiano Checa are preserved in the Museo Municipal Ulpiano Checa de Colmenar de Oreja, the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires and the Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, among others. It has two patches on the reverse.

ULPIANO CHECA (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "Indian chief on horseback". Bronze. Signed. With seal of the founder Colin, Paris. Measurements: 40 x 55 x 20 cm. The one we present here is a passionate and expressive work starring an Indian chief on horseback. The animal of imposing anatomy gallops while its rider, who wears a long plume that falls on his back, looks at the horizon, raising his left hand to focus on his objective. The sculpture stands out for the laborious work of the horse, captured with a precision, naturalism and expressiveness that denote not only mastery on the part of the sculptor, but also a careful study of nature. ULPIANO CHECA (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "The Procession. Oil on linen. Attached certificate of authenticity issued by Doña Monique Larran-Lange. It shows traces of gilding. It has faults and deficiencies in the canvas. Signed at intervals of one metre (approx). Measurements: 19.5 m x 0.55 m. In January 1893, L'Avenir de Bagnères-de-Bigorre devoted a report to the artist's move to the town where his wife has a holiday home: "... the studio, barely installed and already so crowded, with this procession unfolding, a living tapestry, along the wall, against a golden background. Checa amused himself by capturing some of the inhabitants of Bagnères and imagined a procession of the Blessed Sacrament with monks, priests, nuns, choirboys, pensioners and passers-by. He mixed the gothic with the modern, the cameramen in their modern costumes with the musicians in white trousers trimmed with red, wearing a gibbous hat topped with an aigrette. It is a high-spirited pochade, surprising in its colours, tones and animation. The resemblance of some of the best known characters of Bagnères is striking. The work is made up of 21 main groups and is signed at regular intervals. For almost twenty years, the Procession was a silent witness to Checa's work in the Pyrenees. When the painter's studio was demolished and replaced by a school in the 1960s, it was saved. Its interest lies in its intimate and familiar character. Ulpiano Checa offers us a poetic and bucolic image inspired by Classical Antiquity. A young man in robes, seated by the sea, gazes into the distance. Beside him rests an object that could well appear to be a lyre, which would turn our protagonist into Orpheus. This piece is the last remnant of the now defunct studio. As such, it was exhibited in 2001 at the Museo Ulpiano Checa in Colmenar de Oreja (Bayonne, 6 March 2002). Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1876 he moved to the San Fernando Academy, where he became a pupil of Federico de Madrazo. On completing his studies, in 1884, he obtained a grant to study at the Spanish Academy in Rome. During his third year he sent a work that won him the first medal at the National Exhibition of 1887 and the second at the Universal Exhibition in Vienna in 1888. At the end of 1887 he took up residence in Paris, where he exhibited regularly at the Salons, achieving success when his work was awarded a prize in 1890. There he combined painting with his work as a graphic correspondent for "La Ilustración Española y Americana". At the beginning of the century he settled in the south of France, in Dax, where he remained until his death in 1916. It is important to note how Checa's work influenced the adventure films of Hollywood in the 1950s and 1960s. A group of young men on horseback dominate the scene, emphasising the presence of Napoleon who is raising his sword in the centre of the composition. To reflect the scene, the artist has used a concave composition that invites the viewer to become part of it, and within this general distribution of the elements of the painting, other more classical compositional resources can also be seen. It is worth mentioning that this use of distribution brings a great deal of dynamism to the image in harmony with the theme represented. In style and subject matter, we can appreciate the characteristic aesthetic of Ulpiano Checa, a painter gifted with a technical capacity for drawing and the right tones, but also with a notable inventiveness capable of transporting the contemporary viewer to other periods, imagined by the painter as in this particular case. All this is captured in the scene through the exaltation of the characters, the speed of the horses and the harmony of the bodies. ULPIANO CHECA (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "The Hun invasion". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Titled on the back. Size: 48,5 x 79,5 cm; 79 x 111 cm (frame). A group of young men on horseback dominate the scene, emphasizing the presence of one of them who holds a lady dressed in pink whom he has abducted, a composition that is repeated in several works of the artist as the famous painting of the painter titled "The abduction of the Sabines" or "The abduction of Proserpina", which belongs to the collection of the Ulpiano Checa Museum. In this particular case, an inscription on the stretcher indicates that it may be a depiction of the Huns, a recurring theme in Checa's painting, who presented a work on the same subject at the Paris Salon in 1891. To depict the scene, the artist used a concave composition that invites the viewer to become part of it, and within this general distribution of the elements in the painting, other more classical compositional devices can also be seen. It is worth mentioning that this use of distribution brings a great deal of dynamism to the image in harmony with the theme represented. ULPIANO CHECA (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "A Day at the Races". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower right corner. Size: 46,5 x 65 cm; 80 x 99 x 11 cm (frame). The horse races, which have an important tradition in the European society, gave rise to a theme in itself that was practised throughout the 19th century. In this painting, Ulpiano Checa depicts an aristocratic lady enjoying the spectacle, while other members of the gentry sit by the fence. Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873 at the Madrid School of Arts and Crafts. In 1876 he went to the San Fernando Academy, where he became a pupil of Federico de Madrazo. Film directors such as Stanley Kubrick ("Spartacus"), Mario Bonnard ("The Last Days of Pompeii"), Mervyn LeRoy ("Quo Vadis"), William Wyler ("Ben-Hur") and, more recently, Ridley Scott ("Gladiator") were inspired by his works for their set designs, costumes, mass movement studies and characterisation of characters. In fact, he also influenced earlier filmmakers, since in the 1930s and 1940s his work showed directors the possibility of creating visual effects of depth and perspective hitherto unheard of in cinema. ULPIANO CHECA Y SANZ (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "Maghrebi Warriors". Oil on canvas. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 46 x 65 cm; 73 x 92 cm (frame). A group of horsemen wrapped in white tunics burst into an Arab village, in whose architecture we seem to recognise the city of Fez. The galloping of the horses is animated by a tremendous brio. The din of the warriors contrasts with the peaceful life conveyed by the women hidden behind their veils and the old men sitting on the sand, oblivious to the newcomers. The Orientalist theme has here been treated by Ulpiano Checa with bold compositional ingenuity and using warm shades capable of fully immersing us in the Maghreb atmosphere. Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873 at the School of Arts and Crafts in Madrid. In 1876 he moved on to the San Fernando Academy, where he became a pupil of Federico de Madrazo. On completing his studies, in 1884, he obtained a grant to study at the Spanish Academy in Rome. Measurements: 32,5 x 46,5 cm; 49 x 63 cm (frame). Ulpiano Checa offers us a poetic and bucolic image inspired in the Classical Antiquity. A young man in robes, seated by the sea, gazes into the distance. Beside him rests an object that could well appear to be a lyre, which would turn our protagonist into Orpheus. Ulpiano Checa began his artistic training in 1873 at the Madrid School of Arts and Crafts. In 1876 he enrolled at the San Fernando Academy, where he became a pupil of Federico de Madrazo. Attributed to ULPIANO CHECA Y SANZ (Colmenar de Oreja, Madrid, 1860 - Dax, France, 1916). "Justice". Oil on canvas. Relined. It presents faults in the polychrome, restorations and repins. Measurements: 88 x 65,5 cm. Allegory of justice in which the author presents us with a young woman dressed in a white tunic in the Roman way and Phrygian cap. In her right hand she holds the scales, while with the other she grasps a dagger. The highly symbolic scene is completed with a sumptuous interior on whose floor is a flag similar to that of the republic, and a wallpaper that decorates the room with numerous noble coats of arms. At the end of 1887 he took up residence in Paris, where he exhibited regularly in the Salons, achieving success when his work was awarded a prize in 1890. Works by Ulpiano Checa are kept in the Museo Municipal Ulpiano Checa de Colmenar de Oreja, the Museo del Prado, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de Buenos Aires and the Museo de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, among others.
