wood cut signed and dated lower right, titled lower center, numbered (139/150) and technical description lower left sheet size: 23,5 x 14,8 in / plate size: 13,6 x 14,8 in In 1977 the graphic artist Santos Chávez, born and raised in the chilean Mapuche region, leaves the dictatorially governed Chile. In 1981 he finds himself a second home in Germany, Ostberlin, where he resided until 1994. The present red and black woodcut stems from this time period. The Mapuche people are known to be very in tune with their land and the woods, which brought the artist to his use of wood and ultimately the engraving of wood. His works are heavily influenced by the Mapuches vision of the unity that is contrived of humanity, the elements, and the cosmos in which land, the weather, human and non-human life are considered equal.
