Estelle Chaves (1929-2000) American, Oil on Masonite

      Est: $400 - $800

Estelle Chaves (1929-2000) American, Oil on Masonite. Modernist Oil Painting of a harbor dated 1960. Signed mid-left bottom. Additional painting on back of a smiling clown, titled "The Sentinel." Overall: 19 1/2 X 28 3/8 in.  Sight: 14 1/2 X 23 3/8 in.  #2691 .  Estelle Chaves was born in 1929. A self-taught painter, little is known of her early life. She was a featured artist at the Artist's Co-op and the Maxwell Galleries in San Francisco, and at the Evans Gallery and Galleria Gianni in Los Angeles. However, no gallery presentations can be found after 1964. Her work was featured in "Arte Extraordinario," a 2018 show at the Crocker Art Museum. An Art Forum magazine review comments on her "Dream world... architectural improvisations combine a highly finished picture surface... with a penchant for the mysterious... the razor sharp geometric edges... work well with the bright, joyous colors of Miss Chaves' happy palette." She died in Carmel, California in 2000.
