It is presented in a gilt wood frame. The stretcher verso is stamped "MADE IN BELGIUM" and "M. GRUMBACHER NEW YORK." Work Size: 24 x 20 in. Dimensions: 27.5 X 23.5 X 2 in. Condition: Good overall vintage condition having mild surface wear, with toning, primarily to canvas verso. Frame has average storage wear with losses to edges and corners.       Striking painting of a man and woman dancing figures. Professionally framed and behind glass in a wood frame painted in a light gold. Sight: 23.5 inches tall by 17.75 inches wide. Framed: 30 inches tall by 24 inches wide. About the artist: Chatov was born in Rostov on Don, Southern Russia. Discovered his love for drawing at age fourteen and originally trained in art in Russia and France then continued his training by joining the Art Students League and National Academy of Arts after moving to New York in 1922 after the Russian Revolution when Lenin gained power. He was quoted to say that he and his family fled Russia because of communism. Chatov later became known for his murals, most notably a set of murals commissioned for the Russian Tea Room restaurant which are now in the collection of a New York City museum. Chatov was also a costume designer for Florenz Edward Ziegfield Jr, a famous American Broadway impresario known as the glorifier of the American girl or better known for Ziegfield Follies. Chatov was acquainted with Manhattan "™s most successful socialites including abstract expressionist William de Kooning, with whom he shared a studio in the 1930 "™s. His portraits where exhibited by the Garibaldi Galleries in New York. Later he and his brother Constantin opened a studio together and taught art classes as he continued his career as a commissioned mural artist where he previously painted a mural for the Cabana Hotel opening. At this time Roman had prepared drawings for backstage productions which had appeared in Russian theatre magazines. President Roosevelt's Works Project Administration (WPA) commissioned Roman to paint murals for the Ford and Palestinian Pavilions at the 1939 New York World's Fair which led to many more commissioned murals throughout the country. One such mural was the commissioned mural for New York's famous Russian Tea Room which now can be seen in the New York City Museum Collection.

Interesting image depicting a woman standing with a horse and dog. Canvas has been stapled along the edges to a piece of wood. Painting is in rough condition throughout with multiple areas or tears and surface scuffing to the canvas. Bottom half of painting has some type of splatter marks throughout which may be able to be cleaned,however we have not attempted to do so. Examine.       Roman Chatov, Russian- American artist, oil on canvas entitled "Les Patineurs" circa 1987. Depicts winter landscape with figures skating on pond. Signed lower right, R. Chatov. Housed in decorative gold-tone frame with liner. Chatov was an accomplished painter who studied in Russia and Paris before immigrating to the U.S. in 1922. He began his career as a mural painter and costume designer, and he befriended and shared a studio with Willem de Kooning. One of his most notable works is his mural commission for New York's Russian Tea Room. He became an influential member of the arts community, receiving many awards, including the government's "Award in the Arts," which he shared with his brother, Constantin, in 1983. His paintings were exhibited at the Atlanta High Museum and numerous galleries. This piece purchased in 1987 from the Left Bank Gallery in St. Simons, Georgia. Figural study work depicting a seated female nude with eyes closed, slighty down-turned mouth, long hair and hand extended to foot. Framed 17.75" x 23.75".Sight size11.5" x 17.5". Note: Chatov was acquainted with many New York notable individuals such as Florenz Ziegfield of Ziegfield Follies, who hired the artist to design various costumes. He also shared a studio with Willem De Kooning in the 1930's. In the 1940's, Chatov started painting portraits, many of which were carried by Gerialdil Galleries. In 1961, Roman moved to Atlanta where he and his brother Constantine Chatov shared a studio and taught classes.       Roman Chatov (Russian/American (Georgia), 1900-1987), "Figural Drawing of Reclining Young Woman"-1967, pastel on grey paper. Signed and dated lower right "R. Chatov 67". Figural study work depicting a young female nude with long hair reclining with arm resting on waistline in a nondescript setting with sketch lines. Framed 25" x 33". Sight size 17.5" x 25.5". Note: Chatov was acquainted with many New York notable individuals such as Florenz Ziegfield of Ziegfield Follies, who hired the artist to design various costumes. He also shared a studio with Willem De Kooning in the 1930's. In the 1940's, Chatov started painting portraits, many of which were carried by Gerialdil Galleries. In 1961, Roman moved to Atlanta where he and his brother Constantine Chatov shared a studio and taught classes. His portraits hang in many homes and galleries across the Southeast and he was given the Governor's Award from the Georgia Council for the Arts and Humanities in 1983.
