Chartrand’ lower left Dimensions: 20.5 x 35.8 cm In gold-colored frame: 31 x 46.7 cm Good condition Provenance: From the estate of the descendents of a managing director of the cigar producer H. Upmann, Cuba, who was resident in Bremen from 1904 on. Acquired circa 1904 in Cuba Small-format and highly detailed rendition of a Cuban landscape with picturesque lake and palm trees Condition: The painting displays a small patch on verso, there a small touch-up visible under UV-light on recto. Slight framing marks are visible. The overall condition is good, consistent with age. The frame is in good condition with slight signs of age and use. The small-size painting measures 20.5 x 35.8 cm. The framed dimensions are 31 x 46.7 cm. Philippe Chartrand (1825-1889) Born as the son of a wealthy family of French descent in Cuba, Philippe (Felipe) Chartrand studied in Paris, where he was influenced by the landscape painting of the Barbizon School. Back in Cuba, he devoted himself to mostly small landscape painting, but without having obtained the recognition of his brother Esteban, also a landscape painter. For a few months in 1886 Chartrand was an interim professor at the Academia Nacional de Bellas Artes in San Alejandro. His works has been shown in various museums in Cuba.
