      Jun. 23, 2019

      Sarah Bernhardt dans "Gismonda." 1898.

      Est: $1,400 - $2,000

ARTIST: THÉOBALD CHARTRAN (1849-1907) SIZE: 11 x 13 3/4 in./28 x 35 cm DESCRIPTION: With every iota of detailed majesty on display, Chartran photographically commits Bernhardt to the page in her role of the princess Gismonda, resplendent in all her Byzantine glory. “Bernhardt’s turn to melodrama took her from the classical theaters of France to the more popular realm of the Grands Boulevards, and it was the publicity for these more popular houses that in turn brought her to Alphonse Mucha. The Czech-born decorative pioneer of Art Nouveau owed his initial public recognition to the seven posters he made to advertise Bernhardt’s theatrical roles... From 1895 to 1900, when he was under contract to the actress, Mucha also designed stage sets and costumes for her productions” (Bernhardt/Drama, p. 59). The photograph appears to be hand-colored, and includes a signed dedication from Ms. Bernhardt to Mr. Duberry. (Art Nouveau; Theatre; Sarah Bernhardt)

Théobald Chartran Théobald Chartran (20 July 1849 – 16 July 1907) was a classical French propaganda painter autograph signature on the back of his personal business card and dated Washington, March, 1902. He was in Washington and hired for the official portrait of president Theodore Roosevelt.,  with an original cabinet card portrait removed from card. President Theodore Roosevelt's official portrait was originally commissioned to Theobald Chartran in 1902, but when Roosevelt saw the final product he hated it and hid it in the darkest corner of the White House. When family members called it the "Mewing Cat" for making him look so harmless, he had it destroyed and hired John Singer Sargent to paint a more masculine portrait. As "T", he was one of the artists responsible for occasional caricatures of Vanity Fair magazine, specializing in French and Italian subjects. His work for Vanity Fair included Pope Leo XIII, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Umberto I of Italy, William Henry Waddington, all in 1878, Charles Gounod, Giuseppe Verdi, Ernest Renan, Jules Grévy, Napoléon Joseph Charles Paul Bonaparte, Victor Hugo, Marshal MacMahon, Granier de Cassagnac, Louis Blanc, and Alexandre Dumas, Fils, all in 1879.
