JOHN CHARLTON RBA RI ROI (1849-1917)Red SetterOil on canvas, 89 x 71cmSigned with initials and dated May 1901Born to Samuel Charlton and his wife Mary Ann on 28 June 1849, in Northumberland , he received his first lessons in drawing from his father when he was only three or four years old, and within a few years was drawing horses with some skill. He attended evening classes at the Newcastle School of Arts under William Bell Scott . During this time he began to develop quite a reputation locally as a painter of horses and dogs, and he received some commissions to portray family pets. He continued to paint canine portraits throughout his life.He was however particularly drawn to historical and battle scenes and achieved a level of acclaim, producing both paintings and illustrations of military events of the late Victorian era. He debuted at the Royal Academy in 1870, and his first painting with a military theme, Exercising Artillery Horses on a Frosty Morning, appeared three years later. Charlton and his wife Kate Vaughan lost two sons on the Western Front in June 1916, within a week of one another, the shock of which had a damaging effect on his health. He died in November 1917 after a short illness.

        Charlton, John - Winning Post

        Est: $12,000 - $15,000

The Winning Post by John Charlton depicts the Duke of Portland’s Donovan ahead by half a length. The painting is thought to be of the Derby at Epsom in 1889 where the Duke of Portland had two entries, the other being the Turcophone. William John Arthur Charles James Cavendish-Bentink, the sixth Duke of Portland, inherited great wealth and big estates in England and Scotland, including the magnificent establishment at Welbeck, Nottinghamshire. The Duke of Portland was one of the most successful breeders and owners in British Racing during his lifetime. His purchase of St. Simon, perhaps the greatest British sire ever, cemented his highly important role in the annals of the British Turf. The painting above depicts Donavon with jockey Tommy Loates up. Donavon was bred by the Duke of Portland and won 18 of his 21 starts, including the Prince of Wales Stakes, the Derby Stakes, and the St. Legers Stakes.
