              Aug. 18, 2023

1992 Coast Salish Wood Talking Stick by Simon Charlie

              Est: $800 - $1,200

**First Time At Auction** Simon Charlie (First Nations / Canadian, Coast Salish, 1919-2005). Talking Stick. Painted wood sculpture, 1992. Signed with date on eagle's tail. A fascinating wooden talking stick hand-carved by Salish artist Simon Charlie featuring an eagle with spread wings atop a pair of stacked killer whales. These animals are highly important to Salish culture: the eagle represents grace, power and great intellect, while the whales symbolize family, romance, longevity, harmony, travel, community and protection. A talking stick like this example would only be used at formal occasions. When making a speech, the speaker will gesture with his talking stick or pound it on the floor to give emphasis to his words. Size: 6.3" W x 21.5" H (16 cm x 54.6 cm) Simon Charlie (Hwunumetse) was named a 2003 recipient of the Order of Canada for his major contributions to education and preservation of his Coast Salish cultural heritage. Additional honors include the National Centennial Medal (1967) and the Order of British Columbia (2001). Quite prolific, Charlie's totem poles stand in the Royal British Columbia Museum, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa, New York, Chicago, Holland, New Zealand, and Australia. His artworks and masks are also found in esteemed collections in North and South America, Europe, and Japan. Committed to preserving cultural traditions, language, and the visual arts of his people, Charlie was also dedicated to sharing this knowledge with the younger generation by mentoring young Coast Salish artists. Provenance: private Alamo, California, USA collection, before 2000; ex-Leon LaFortune estate, Vancouver, BC, Canada All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. The hollow body is shaped like a copper - a large ceremonial panel made of copper that were symbols of prestige- the interior filled with small pebbles, and the surface is painted with a raven on one side. A wrist cord, brass bells and glass beads are tied to the handle. Size: 6" L x 2" W (15.2 cm x 5.1 cm) Simon Charlie's career spanned more than 30 years. May. 10, 2018

20th C. Salish Wood Fishing Lure, Signed Simon Charlie

              Est: $750 - $1,050

Simon Charlie (Coast Salish, 1920-2005), Duncan, British Columbia, ca. mid 20th century CE. A hand-carved and hand-painted wooden cod lure with a zoomorphic head (perhaps belonging to a sea wolf) and three ovoid extensions - decorated throughout with red and black painted figural designs. The head is carved and painted with bold features, and the three extensions feature additional painted iconography including a fish on the uppermost and red-spotted slithering tailed body forms on the side elements, probably intended to complete the sea wolf. Size: 13.25" L x 6.75" H (33.7 cm x 17.1 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand. Simon Charlie (Hwunumetse) was named a 2003 recipient of the Order of Canada for his major contributions to education and preservation of his Coast Salish cultural heritage. This hook style was designed to capture the correct size of cod, who feed by opening their mouths wide. If the fish was too small, it would not be able to hook itself; if the fish was too large (and might capsize a small boat), it would put the entire hook in its mouth and not be barbed. Over time, hooks like these were replaced by non-wooden technology; however, they continued to be carved as pieces of art. Provenance: private Newport Beach, California Collection All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
