Elizabeth Quale O'Neill Verner (South Carolina, 1883-1979) pastel on silk portrait depicting a Charleston flower vendor seated with a bouquet of flowers in her lap. She smokes a pipe and wears a distinctive knit hat. Signed "Elizabeth O'Neill Verner" lower right. Housed in a modern wood frame. Sight: 8 1/4" H x 8" W. Framed: 11 7/8" H x 11 11/16" W. Biography: "A native of Charleston, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner was an artist, teacher, and preservationist who became one of South Carolina's best known practitioners of the early twentieth century. Pastels and printmaking were her preferred media, and her images of residences, churches, and street scenes were widely recognized for their skill and authenticity, and for capturing the romantic sensibility of Charleston. She began her art training under the guidance of Alice Ravenel Huger Smith and then continued at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia, beginning in 1901 for two years with noted instructor Thomas Anshutz. Following her time at the academy, she taught art in Aiken, South Carolina, before returning to Charleston. In 1907, she met and married E. Pettigrew Verner and raised their two children. She resumed her studies with Smith and turned her attention to depictions of her hometown, which she infused with the charm and local color that distinguishes Charleston. In land- and cityscapes, Verner often focused on the architecture and environment while deemphasizing any human presence. She eventually expanded her range to become an able portraitist and figurative painter." (Source: The Johnson Collection.)

Elizabeth O'Neill Verner "Church Street" signed lithograph. Features a view of St. Michaels looking up church street, Dock Street Theater on the right and the French Huguenot Church on the left. Signed in pencil lower right "Elizabeth O'Neill Verner" and on the left is written "Repro", which is how she signed most of her printed works that were not original drawings or paintings. Purchased at her studio, Charleston SC. Professionally Framed and matted at her studio, in frame measures 12 1/2"x16 1/2"x.50". Weight is 2 pds. PROVENANCE: A Charleston SC Private Estate. Considered the matriarch of the Charleston Renaissance, Elizabeth O'Neill Verner created images of her native city that would, over time, come to be viewed as the quintessential aesthetic definition of Charleston and the South Carolina Lowcountry. The daughter of a rice broker, Verner began drawing as a child. She studied locally with Alice Ravenel Huger Smith before spending two years under Thomas Anshutz's tutelage at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Returning to Charleston in 1903, she married E. Pettigrew Verner and raised two children. During this period, she studied informally, painting scenes of Charleston in her spare time and studying Japanese printing techniques. In 1923, she took up etching. In 1925 established her own studio in Charleston. A founding member of the Charleston Etchers Club, Verner was a respected leader in the city's art community. Along with Alice Smith, Anna Heyward Taylor, and Alfred Hutty, she played a pivotal role in Charleston's dramatic mid-century cultural renewal. Her works showcased Charleston's natural beauty and charm, including: live oaks draped in moss; tall cypress trees in abandoned rice preserves; colorful flower women; and the streets and alleyways of the city, a favorite motif. An extremely articulate artist, Verner taught (William Melton Halsey was a early student), lectured, and authored four books illustrated with her etchings. She also illustrated DuBose Heyward's Porgy and Bess. In recognition of her contribution to the arts, the state of South Carolina named a prestigious annual art award after Verner. Her works are represented in the collections of national institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum, as well as leading museums across the Southeast.

        Apr. 23, 2017

        ELIZABETH O'NEILL VERNER CHARLESTON

        Est: $200 - $300

Framed Color Lithograph Print with Embossed Signature lower right (under mat) by Elizabeth O'Neill Verner. Charleston Street. Professionally framed and double matted. Measures in frame 18"x21"x1". Weight is 4 pds. PROVENANCE: A Private Charleston SC Estate. Elizabeth Quale O'Neill (Verner), 1883 - 1979, was born in Charleston, South Carolina, daughter of a prosperous rice factor and lived a life of privilege until the rice growing industry moved to Louisiana and Texas in the mid 1890's. In remembering her father, she wrote, "He selected the highest to accent in life. Because he enjoyed gracious living, easy hospitality, fine clothes, good food, the best in literature and most of all, peace, he had these things, and we, his children, had them too." In 1900 her parents, recognizing her talent, sent her to Philadelphia to study at the Pennsylvania Academy of Art under Thomas Anchutes the disciple of Thomas Eakins, founder of what was known as The American School of Painting from which Verner learned her aesthetic discipline. She returned to Charleston in 1903 at the time of her father's death, to discover her family in crisis as her father had done all his business on a handshake and kept no notes. No one could continue his business. The family began to live by selling their investments which maintained her mother and younger siblings until the 1920's when her mother died. She married E. Pettigrew Verner, producing two children, Elizabeth Pettigrew (1908) and David Battle (1911), while continuing her art mostly in the form of oil paintings. In the mid 1920's her husband died, and she threw herself into becoming a professional artist. In a very short time she succeeded in attracting widespread attention. It was in the medium of etching that she excelled and between 1925 and 1933 she produced a phenomenal body of work. She did continue to produce drypoints for some years, but by 1937 she had ceased her intalio work and picked up pastels which she added to a continuing love of drawing. To this she added letters to her accomplishments publishing four books and lecturing widely. She drew her last pastel,"Day Clean at Middleton Place" in 1963, 60 years after leaving the Pennsylvania Academy.
