        Est: $800 - $1,200

BILL OF SALE FOR THE WHALESHIP NILE OF NEW BEDFORD Dated 1841 For a one-eighth part, sold by Charles W. Morgan to William Hathaway, Jr. and Matthew Luce for the sum of $1,250. Dated February 8, 1841. Pre-printed double-sided document with handwritten notations, including the name of the captain, Frederick A. Stall, and a physical description of the vessel. Housed in a double-sided frame so that both sides are visible. 12.5" x 16.25" sight. Framed 18.25" x 22". The Nile was built in New York in 1826 and operated as a whaleship in the Pacific and Arctic throughout her life. She frequented the ports of Honolulu and Lahaina, with the last recorded call in 1870. In 1865 she was one of many whaleships captured by the Confederate pirate ship Shenandoah . Most of the captured ships were set ablaze, but the Nile was spared and sent to the West Coast with crew members of the burned ships. (Interestingly, this is believed to have occurred after the Civil War had already ended, unbeknownst to the whalemen.)
