A Charles II needlework picture of Belshazzar's Feast, mid to late 17th century, worked in tent stitch with polychrome silks on canvas, depicting the feast, with writings on the wall 'Mene, Mene, Tekel, Upharsin', needlework 25 x 35.5cm, in a glazed and parcel-gilt frame, 31 x 42cm overall This needlework depicts the story of the great feast of Belshazzar, from Daniel 5:1-31. Belshazzar died the very night of the feast after Daniel told him that he was 'weighed in the balances and found wanting'. The scene has been portrayed in art by Rembrandt, in music by George Frideric Handel and Johnny Cash, and in poetry by Lord Byron and Emily Dickinson. It has also given us the common expressions 'the writing's on the wall' and ‘your days are numbered’, indicating a sure and soon danger.

Provenance : Sir Robert Craven. This clock was custom made for Sir Robert in the 1960's and was valued by John Gurr in 2003 at 2500 sterling pounds, It measures 40cm high by 27cm wide and 19cm deep

"A Outrance" French Cuirassier Bronze by Charles Anfrie This bronze by Charles Anfire (1833-1904) depicts a dismounted French trooper of the 9th Cuirassiers Regiment from the Franco-Prussian War swinging his saber downward. The 9th Cuirassiers Regiment was part of the 3rd brigade of the cavalry division, 1st Corps, of the Army of the Rhine. The bronze is signed at the base "C. Anfrie", and it is mounted atop a brass plinth that has a plaque marked "A OUTRANCE/PAR C. ANFRIE". A threaded stud is visible on the crest of the helm where a small pompom/plume was likely once attached. The bronze measures approximately 21 1/2" tall including the base. He was succeeded by his son, Jaques, and son-in-law, Jean-Samuel Rossell, who continued the business under the name 'Jean-Francois Bautte et Cie'. Cleret is recorded by Baillie as working in Paris 1812-15, however a maker of this name, who described himself as an 'Eleve de Robin' (pupil of Robin), is known to have been working in 1829.
