        IMPERIAL RUSSIAN CORONATION DINNER MENU, 1883. Comprising an original color lithograph dinner menu for the coronation of Alexander III. By the artist Adolf Iosifovich Charlemagne (1826 - 1901). Depicting in the background the Grand Kremlin Palace, and the domes of the Assumption Cathedral behind the Kremlin walls. On the left a heraldic shield with the cyphers of Emperor Alexander III and Empress Maria Feodorovna above the date 1883 as well as the coat of arms for various Russian cities and further above trophies. Below is inscribed the poem The Song of the Merchant Kalashnikov, by Mikhail Lermontov and on the right side the dinner menu. Dated 23 March 1883. 14 x 8.75 inches (35.5 x 22 cm).         An antique oil on metal plate painting depicting a carriage ride and attributed to Adolf Jossifowitsch Charlemagne, Russian, 1826 to 1901. Signed: Ad. Charlemagne and dated 1864 on the lower left. Housed in an old richly decorated giltwood and gesso frame. Features a Doyle New York auction paper label verso. Provenance: Doyle New York, February 11, 2009, lot 1051. Note: Adolphe Josefovich Charlemagne was born in St. Petersburg in 1826, and is the younger brother of the artist Josef Josefovich Charlemagne. Like his sibling, he studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts from 1848, where he studied historic painting under Feodor Antonovich Bruni, 1799 to 1875 and battle painting with Bogdan Pavlovich Villevalde, 1818 to 1903. He spent the majority of his career working on official commissions which recorded the major events in the reign of Alexander II, and in 1875 was awarded the title of Artist of His Imperial Majesty. H. 25,5 x L. 36,5 cm (à vue). Historique Adolphe Josefovich Charlemagne (1826-1901) est né à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1826, et a étudié à l'Académie impériale des arts à partir de 1848. La majorité de ses œuvres retracent les événements importants du règne du tsar Alexandre II.
