    • Timothy Chapman, Mixed Media, Signed in Pencil 1/1
      May. 31, 2021

Timothy Chapman, Mixed Media, Signed in Pencil 1/1

      Est: $2,000 - $5,000

For inspiration, he turns to figures in art history, such as the surrealists, Hieronymus Bosch, and Giuseppe Arcimboldo, the 16th-century Italian painter who created bizarre portraits of people by incorporating images of animals and vegetables to depict their heads and faces. Chapman enjoys tweaking images and making up entirely new species in hopes that people will come away with a sense of having discovered something new. "What I want most is to impart to the viewer a sense of wonder and strangeness that nature photography and video, in spite of their inherent capacity for precision, cannot." After receiving his undergraduate degree in Biology from Occidental College near Los Angeles, Timothy Chapman went on to get a BFA from Arizona State University and then an MFA From Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, both in printmaking. He later began painting seriously for want of a press. Most recently he was honored to be chosen by the U.S. State Department to show paintings in the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, and to have work become part of its permanent collection in Myanmar (Burma). Chapman lives and works in Arizona............................................................. Timothy Chapman (AZ), Equus Ornithopictus

      Est: $800 - $1,200

oil and acrylic on birch panel, signed and dated 2008 at lower right and on the verso, self-framed. DOA 36.25 x 48.25 in. According to the artist's statement: The look of this work owes a lot to my fondness for earlier styles of depicting animals, particularly the copperplate engravings that illustrated Buffon‰Ûªs Natural History (begun in 1766) as well as Victorian animal portraiture and old scientific illustration. I have tried to present similarly earnest, but basically inaccurate, renderings of animals by using humor, irony and surrealistic sensibility that is not available to the scientist. What I want most is to impart to the viewer a sense of wonder and strangeness that nature photography and video, in spite of their inherent capacity for precision, cannot. Giacobbe Fritz Fine Art, Santa Fe, NM (with COA) From the Estate of Mary Ellen Dryden, Pittsboro, NC Additional high-resolution photos are available at LelandLittle.com
