GEORGE CHAPMAN,  BRITISH 1908-1994 -  FARM ENTRANCE;  OIL ON PAPER LAID DOWN ON BOARD, INSCRIBED W

        Est: £500 - £800

George Chapman,  British 1908-1994 -  Farm Entrance;  oil on paper laid down on board, inscribed with artist's details on the reverse of the board, 50.7 x 61.5 cm (ARR)  Note: this work relates to another work by Chapman of the same scene that was included in a retrospective on the artist at Fry Art Gallery, 'George Chapman (1908-1993) From Bardfield to the Rhondda' in 2017. As noted in the cataloguing for that work, this painting features an expressionistic sky, that demonstrates the early influence of Soutine on Chapman. In this cataloguing the work was dated to 1937/38 but it is also possible that the work was made later when Chapman lived in Great Bardfield from 1948-1960, where he became part of the artistic community alongside Edward Bawden and Michael Rothenstein.  It is possibly of Charity Farm just outside Great Bardfield.  Chapman's work is in public collections including Fry Art Gallery, the National Museum of Wales and Southampton City Art Gallery. With thanks to Janet Dyson for her assistance with the cataloguing of this work.

AR * Chapman (George, 1908-1994). Rhondda street scene, oil Chapman (George, 1908-1994). Street in Rhondda, oil on board, 61.8 x 77.8 cm (24 1/4 x 30 5/8 ins), framed (74 x 89.5 cm), verso with attached purchase receipt dated 2010 QTY: (1) NOTE: Provenance: Private Collection, West Wales, UK. George Chapman trained at the Slade School of Fine Art and the Royal College of Art. After visiting South Wales his main focus became paintings of the Rhondda and the surrounding coalmining areas. After winning the Gold Medal at the National Eisteddfod in 1957 he moved to Wales, and his portrayals of the Welsh valleys have become a record of the communities and industrial landscapes that were rapidly vanishing in his lifetime.
