CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) CHAPLIN CHARLES: (1889-1977) English film comedian, Academy Award winner. A wonderful vintage signed 8 x 10 photograph of Chaplin, the image depicting him seated outdoors in a full-length pose, in costume as the Little Tramp, alongside actress Merna Kennedy, a circus rider and stepdaughter of her ringmaster, in a scene from Chaplin's silent romantic comedy film The Circus (1928). Signed by Chaplin in black fountain pen ink to a clear area of the image, also adding the film's title in his hand beneath his signature. Chaplin has further added the name of his co-star to the image, the surname running into a dark area. Signed photographs of Chaplin of this quality, showing him in his most famous screen persona, are scarce and highly desirable. Some very light, extremely minor age wear, VG The Circus (1928) is the seventh highest grossing silent film in cinema history. Chaplin was presented with a Special Academy Award in 1928 for ‘acting, writing, directing and producing’ the film.

An unusual vintage signed and inscribed sepia 8 x 10 photograph, the candid image depicting Chaplin, Goddard and Captain Karl A. Ahlin standing together, arm-in-arm, in full-length poses on the deck of the SS President Coolidge. Signed by Chaplin in fountain pen ink with his name alone to a light area at the head of the image and signed and inscribed by Goddard in fountain pen ink to the image, adding the words 'on board S. S. Coolidge' in her hand beneath her signature. Also dated, possibly in Goddard's hand, 21st February 1936 to the upper right corner of the image. Both signatures are a touch light in places and Goodard's surname runs across a darker area. A few minor surface and corner creases, one slightly affecting Chaplin's signature. About VG Karl A. Ahlin (1867-1953) Captain of the luxury ocean liner S.S. President Coolidge from her maiden voyage in October 1931 until Ahlin's retirement in May 1939. Chaplin and Goddard had begun a relationship in 1932, and married in secret in June 1936, just a few months after signing the present photograph. 1936 was also the year in which Chaplin and Goddard starred alongside each other in the classic satirical romantic black comedy film Modern Times, which was also directed by Chaplin and represented the last performance of his iconic Little Tramp character.
