      Oct. 26, 2019

Ornamental Map Of The United States, William Chapin, 1839

      Est: $12,000 - $18,000

This is an ornamental hand-colored wall map of the United States from 1839; the first in a very popular series of wall maps published by William Chapin. The map was engraved by J.B Taylor and J. F. Wheeler, and was sold by A. T. Goorich. The series of maps are noted not just for their excellent geographical rendering of the United States, with roads, counties, towns, etc. all clearly indicated, but their elaborate allegorical and architectural motifs. This map includes ornate columns and is graced with four sweeping vignettes of Boston, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore in the four corners. Along the border, the map is decorated with portraits of George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren- the first eight American Presidents. The map also features smaller inset maps, titled the Western Territory of the United States, Texas, The Canadas, the North Part of Maine, South Part of Florida, British Possessions in North America, the World, Colombia, and the West Indies.
