He was also noted for his portrait of Polish actress Helena Modjeska, posed when she played the role of Mary Queen of Scots. In New Orleans he did Creole subjects.

      View of Lake George, Adirondacks, NY, c.1870's. Oil on canvas, signed lower left "Chapin", 11 1/2" x 21 3/4", in period heavy gilt frame, possibly selected by the artist. In stable, presentable condition, but with cracks to the paint which could be minimized with a relining of the canvas. Chapin had an itinerant and prolific career, living and working in Boston, NYC, New Orleans, Florida, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He illustrated Civil War scenes for Harper's Weekly in 1864, and is known for his paintings of natural splendors such as the Grand Canyon and the Adirondack mountains, where he disappeared and presumably accidentally drowned in the North River in December 1888.

      Charles Henry Chapin (American, 1830-1889, act. New Orleans, 1882-1885) , "Bayou Landscape", pastel and watercolor on paper mounted to canvas, signed lower right, 25 in. x 30 in., framed. Note: Charles Henry Chapin arrived in New Orleans from New York in the winter of 1882, and he advertised as a painter of portraits and landscapes as well as a teacher. A well-traveled artist, Chapin had earned critical acclaim for his earlier landscapes of the Adirondack Mountains and Grand Canyon, along with his noted portrait of Polish actress Helena Modjeska in her role as Mary Queen of Scots. While in New Orleans, Chapin established a studio on Dryades Street and exhibited at W.E. Seebold's art gallery. He resided in New Orleans from 1882 to 1885 and took trips during this time period along the central and southern Gulf coast of Florida. As a landscape painter, Chapin was noted for his skill in oil as well as watercolor. In the painting offered here, he beautifully and adeptly captures the light reflected on the water as well as the luminosity of the distant horizon.
